The undergraduate programs include the Business Management major and the Business Management minor. Minors or other majors of particular interest to students majoring in Business Management: Applied Mathematics and Statistics (AMS), Computer Science (CSE), Economics (ECO), Information Systems (ISE), Psychology (PSY), Political Science (POL), Technological Systems Management (TSM)

The College of Business offers undergraduate students a major and a minor in Business Management. The major program offers students a solid foundation of essential business concepts and applications. In addition to courses in statistics, decision sciences, and general management, students study the fundamentals of four business functions: accounting, finance, marketing or operations. Majors have an opportunity to specialize in one of these four business functions. The knowledge gained in the specialization assists students to gain employment in that area of a business. Business majors are also required to minor in a discipline outside of business. In addition to providing the student with a broader education, the minor can also provide students with complementary knowledge in their business specialization. Business does not operate in isolation from other disciplines but looks to the arts and sciences for insight into such important business topics as leadership, ethics, consumer behavior, information systems, mathematical models and international relations.

The Business Management Major
Designed for the student who wishes to enter the business arena equipped with substantial knowledge and skills across the full spectrum of business disciplines. Students in the major will study accounting, marketing, finance, management information systems, operations management, human resource management, and business strategy along with a full complement of support courses in economics, statistics, and ethics.

Why the Business Management Major? Managers play a critical role in shaping America's future. Businesses need managers who are effective, creative, disciplined and well educated. The Business Management program gives students the necessary career skills to obtain diverse and innovative managerial and professional positions in all areas of business. Career opportunities include management positions in manufacturing companies, business and management consulting, financial planning and banking, sales management, marketing and personnel administration.

The University at Stony Brook, through the College of Business, has offered the Business Management major since 1988. Enrollment in the major has grown steadily since its inception, as has its recognition by academia and business and the number of options available to students.

The undergraduate major combines a solid foundation in business topics with a liberal arts education. Every student takes courses throughout the University and in the College of Business. Leaders in all economic sectors urge business students to broaden their understanding of the world by exploring non-business subjects.

Business throughout the world is intertwined with government. Business affects social change and is influenced by it. It adapts to cultures and alters them. It develops technology and is driven by it, and it must respond to changing economic conditions while contributing to those changes. The Business Management major, combined with Stony Brook's liberal arts education, prepares you to manage effectively in the world's competitive marketplaces.

The Business Management Minor
Intended for the student who wishes to major in another field while acquiring a basic understanding of business. This is an excellent choice for students with another major who are considering graduate study in business.

Why the Business Management Minor? The Business Management minor provides an excellent opportunity for undergraduates at Stony Brook to improve their preparation for careers in business or for graduate study in business. The program is sophisticated and demanding but it is not designed to teach you all the nuts and bolts of everyday business life. Rather it introduces you to the fundamental quantitative skills, economic concepts, and the understanding of organizations and institutions that contribute to long-run success in business. By taking the minor in business, you signal both your interest in a business career and your preparation for advanced study of Business Management in a wide variety of industries.
