What is the Stony Brook Fast Track MBA program?
The Stony Brook Fast Track Bachelor's/MBA program combines a four-year undergraduate degree and a two-year MBA into a five-year program. Undergraduate students in this program take graduate MBA courses during the summer after their junior year, and during the spring and fall semesters of their senior year, so that they can enter the second year of the MBA program in the fifth year. It is designed for high-achieving students with a record of leadership and academic excellence. The premeire program in summer of 2006 was highly successful, and provided an exciting educational experience for all enrolled Fast Track students.

Who is eligible?
Candidates for this program may come from just about any major. (See below for a list of majors that qualify.) Because students in this program will take 60 graduate credits in business, we require an undergraduate major outside of business. Business majors must have a double major to apply. In considering applications for admission to the program, we will examine a student’s cumulative grade point average, standardized test scores, and leadership ability. We expect applicants would have a 3.1 cumulative GPA and at least one college-level calculus course. Qualified students will be interviewed as part of the admission process.

When to apply
Applications must be received no later than February 1. We encourage students to apply in their junior year because the program begins the following summer. We also will review applications from exceptional high school seniors and college freshmen and sophomores.

How to apply
Students must complete an application to the Stony Brook University Graduate School, which requires three letters of recommendation, transcripts of their undergraduate record, and the results of the GMAT standardized test. We will accept SAT scores for the Stony Brook Fast Track MBA as a substitute for GMAT scores. Students also must write a personal statement in which they discuss their leadership abilities, career aspirations, and reasons for wanting an MBA. To complete the application online click APPLICATION. Mail or deliver letters of recommendation to the College of Business Office of Student Services, Room 102 Harriman Hall, Stony Brook University, Stony Brook, NY 11794-3775.

When do I begin to take MBA courses?
Stony Brook Fast Track MBA students take an intensive 15 graduate-credit program on the Stony Brook campus in the summer following their junior year. The summer program gives students a rich educational experience in a dynamic program. During a ten-week period from late May to early August, students participate in five foundational MBA courses, including finance, financial accounting, leadership, marketing and operations management. These are hands-on courses taught in a workshop format and include an industry project with a real business, a business simulation competition, team activities, and presentations and guest speakers from the business world. The program runs five days a week full time.

When do I take MBA courses in my senior year?
Students may take additional MBA courses in their senior year or the following summer, depending on the flexibility of their undergraduate major. If a major leaves no room for general electives, students can complete the graduate courses during the summer following the senior year. The program provides students with a flexible schedule to complete the MBA courses. Students whose schedules do not permit completing the program in five years may take additional semesters.

Can I count graduate credits toward my undergraduate degree?
Yes, students in this program may substitute up to 15 graduate MBA credits in their senior year for general undergraduate electives. All students must fulfill their DEC and undergraduate major requirements. Beyond these requirements, students may substitute the graduate business courses for general electives.

Can seniors apply for the program?
Seniors cannot enter the combined degree program; however, they can apply to the regular MBA program. If there is room in the summer program, we will permit seniors to attend, which will accelerate completion of the two-year MBA.

What business courses will I take in the MBA program?
All students take 11 core courses plus seven electives and complete an industry project. The core courses include the five courses in the summer program-Finance, Financial Accounting, Leadership, Marketing and Operations Management-plus six other courses: Data Analysis and Decision Making, Ethics and Law, Managerial Economics, Organizational Behavior, Strategy, and Technological Innovations. In the final year of the MBA, students must choose one of the following areas of concentration: Finance, General Management, Health-Care Management, Human Resource Management, Information Systems Management, or Marketing. Students must take at least four of seven electives in the area of their concentration.

Is there opportunity to study abroad?
In this era of business globalization, it is important for students to have experience in a foreign country. We encourage students to complete some part of their study abroad unless the United States is not their native country. Depending on their schedule, students can take an internship, a short course, or a more intense course of study abroad in the summer following their senior year. We will arrange to have a study abroad program at several designated business schools. Students can arrange to complete up to 12 credits in the study abroad program.

What is the tuition for this program?
As a combined degree student you will begin taking graduate courses as an undergraduate, but will continue to pay undergraduate rates until you begin to work on your final 60 credits.  For the semester that marks the beginning of your final 60 credits (even though some of these final credits may consist of undergraduate courses), you will matriculate as a graduate student, move into graduate housing and begin to pay graduate tuition rates.  See http://ws.cc.stonybrook.edu/bursar/tuition/mba.shtml  for more information on tuition rates.  Note: your financial aid status will change when you matriculate as a graduate student.  Please talk to a financial aid counselor so that you fully understand the changes.

How many graduate credits do I take during the first four years of college?
To complete the program in five years, students would take 30 graduate credits before their fifth year. These credits can be taken during the senior year or during the summers following the junior and senior academic years, or during the January intercession. All students must take 15 credits in the summer following their junior year. Students who have room in their schedule can then take 15 to 18 credits during their senior year. There is no requirement to finish the MBA in five years. Additional semesters may be taken if a student's schedule does not permit the completion of MBA courses in five years.

Do I receive two degrees at once?
Except for engineering majors, students in this program will receive both the undergraduate and the graduate degrees at the same time. In the event that a student decides not to complete the graduate degree, he or she would receive an undergraduate degree if all requirements are met.
