What Is the Year of Community: Mentoring for Success?
The Campus Community Initiative began four years ago with the Year of Community. During subsequent years, the University has continued to promote the ideals expressed in the 1999-2000 Year of Community Statement.
This campus-wide tradition continued in 2000-01 with the Year of Community Service, which led to more involvement in volunteerism and outreach efforts. 2001-02 ushered in Community Leadership, promoting the recognition of unsung individuals and groups that have helped to shape our community and our world. The following year, Stony Brook celebrated Ethics in Leadership, addressing the ethical challenges that confront us, perhaps more urgently now than ever before.
President Shirley Strum Kenny has announced that the 2003-04 theme of Year of Community: Mentoring for Success will continue throughout the 2004-2005 school year. During the semester, symposia, lectures, and other events will center on the student experience, investigating the ways in which all our professional interactions are mentoring opportunities.
