The Year of Community Giving:
Action * Compassion * Time * Support
The Year of Community: A Campus Tradition
The annual Campus Community Initiative began six years ago with the Year of Community. During subsequent years, the University has continued to promote the ideals expressed in the 1999-2000 Year of Community Statement.
This campus-wide tradition continued in 2000-01 with the Year of Community Service, which led to more involvement in volunteerism and outreach efforts. 2001-02 ushered in Community Leadership, promoting the recognition of unsung individuals and groups that have helped to shape our community and our world.
The following year, Stony Brook celebrated Ethics in Leadership, addressing the ethical challenges that confront us, perhaps more urgently now than ever before. Last year, we carried on the tradition with a yearlong celebration of Mentoring for Success.
"The Year of Community Giving: Action, Compassion, Time, Support" has been selected as the theme for the 2005-06 school year. During the semester, symposia, lectures, and other events will highlight the many different ways students, faculty, and staff volunteer and give back to the local community.
As the year progresses, return to this site frequently for information, updates, and schedules.
Paying It Forward
Giving can be achieved through acts of compassion, allocation of time, and/or financial support. To gain a better understanding of the ways in which members of our Stony Brook Community are giving, on- and off-campus, we ask you to respond to our survey questions (Adobe .pdf format).
With your help we hope this information will broaden our knowledge about the various causes, initiatives, and efforts our campus community is involved in and enable us to feature some of these in various publications and campus media outlets. Thank you for your participation.
