The celebration of the Year of Community: Ethics in Leadership continues this spring with many special events, listed below. Wednesday, April 30
The God Squad
Photo: The God SquadSharing their views on ethics will be the popular duo of The Rev. Monsignor Thomas J. Hartman and Rabbi Marc A. Gellman, also known as The God Squad, authors of a syndicated newspaper column and the hosts of a daily television talk show of the same name. The speakers will also be presented with the Year of Community Ray of Light Award in honor of their contributions to the local community. Provost’s Lecture Series:
Ronald Atlas on “Responding to the Threat of Bioterrorism”

Photo: Ronald AtlasProfessor Ronald M. Atlas, a Stony Brook alumnus, is an expert on bioterrorism. He is President of the American Society for Microbiology, and professor of biology and public health and co-director of the Center for Deterrence of Biowarfare and Bioterrorism at the University of Louisville. This event is co-sponsored by the Year of Community: Ethics in Leadership.

Wednesday, March 12
Women’s Studies Conference: Trafficking, Migration, and Globalization: Tourism and the Sex Trade
This all-day conference will cover topics such as: analyses of contemporary anti-trafficking discourses; globalization and migrations for the sex trade; critiques of (white/traditional) radical and liberal feminist perspectives on prostitution; and theorizing intersections of sex work, sexual agency, race, and sexuality. Speakers include Professor Celia Marshik, Department of History, Stony Brook University; Kamala Kempadoo, Department of Sociology, York University; and Beverley Mullings, Department of Geography, Syracuse University. The Annual Leadership Symposium
This year’s topic is “Ethical Leadership: Challenges to Learning Communities.” The goal of the annual symposium is to enrich leadership training to better equip education and community leaders to engage social issues in ways that advance community scholarship, trust, acceptance, and responsibility. Speakers include John Marburger, former Stony Brook president and now Science Advisor to President George W. Bush; Dr. Terry Mizrahi, President, National Association of Social Workers; and two university presidents. The event is free and open to the entire campus community. Ethicist Randy Cohen: "The Good, the Bad, and The Difference"
Photo: Randy CohenRandy Cohen writes the weekly column "The Ethicist” for the New York Times Magazine and is an Emmy Award-winning former writer for The Late Show with David Letterman. Join us for a lively, interactive talk with Randy Cohen as he shares his views of ethical behavior and encourages dialogue by taking questions from the audience. Cohen’s latest book is The Good, The Bad and The Difference: How to Tell Right From Wrong in Everyday Situations, which he will be signing after the talk.
