Freshman Year
Every freshman enters Stony Brook as a member of one of six undergraduate colleges organized around themes of general interest to students: Leadership and Service; Human Development; Global Studies; Science and Society; Information and Technology; and Arts, Culture, and Humanities. The Student Activities Center features a 3,000-square-foot fitness center, an international food court, student lounges, game rooms, an art gallery, and the Eugene Weidman Wellness Center. Arts & Humanities

Visual & Performing Arts
Come study with the renowned Emerson String Quartet, Stony Brook's Quartet-in-Residence. Performing arts students make full use of the two stages at the Staller Center for the Arts, Long Island's premier cultural showplace. World-renowned entertainers headline Staller performances every season that include dance, music, art, theatre, and film from around the world.

Humanities
Small classes in writing, philosophy, comparative literature, and languages mean lots of time for discussion and one-on-one assistance. Study Italian Language and Literature and do a summer study abroad in Rome. Pursue a major in Religious Studies or earn a minor in German for Business or Latin American and Caribbean Studies.

Study Abroad

Athletics
Stony Brook's NCAA Division I athletics programs offer a wide range of options for serious competitors and sports enthusiasts.

Seawolves
Go Seawolves! Stony Brook's Division I-AA football team competes against Albany, Lehigh, Hofstra, and New Hampshire. Our other Division I teams compete in the America East Conference.

Our Kenneth P. LaValle Stadium seats 8,300 and boasts a state-of-the-art playing surface.

Getting Physical
Whether you star on the basketball court or throw a Frisbee around, there are plenty of ways to get physical at Stony Brook.

We offer an extensive intramural and recreation program, a state-of-the-art fitness center, and a variety of club sports. The Indoor Sports Complex has a 5,000-seat arena, an indoor track, a 25-yard indoor pool, and courts for all kinds of sports.

Outdoor sports facilities include playing fields, tennis courts, and jogging and bicycle paths.

Stony Brook's 1,100 wooded acres include a pond, bike trails, and an inviting Academic Mall. Our parklike campus boasts acres of nature preserves, studded with architectural landmarks like the stunning Charles B. Wang Center.

Living
Stony Brook's 26 residence halls have been completely renovated, the largest project of its kind in American higher education. From kitchens to elevators to mattresses to carpeting—think new!

Each residence hall has its own computing center, large-screen TVs, and new pool tables. All rooms are equipped with high-speed Internet access. We offer a wide range of dining options, including food courts, restaurants, American and international cuisines, and vegan, vegetarian, and Kosher dining.

Commuters
Commuter students comprise a large percentage of Stony Brook's student body. The Office of Commuter Student Services provides programming, outreach, and advocacy, and links incoming commuter students with seasoned upper-division students who can offer guidance and make commuters feel at home on campus.
