Stony Brook is one of only 94 institutions in the country to be designated a "Very High Research University" by the Carnegie Foundation. Our faculty have been responsible for more than 1,100 inventions and 500 patents.

The University co-manages Brookhaven National Laboratory, joining an elite group of universities – including Berkeley, University of Chicago, Cornell, MIT, and Princeton – that run federal laboratories.

The East and West Campus University Libraries at Stony Brook contain nearly two million bound volumes and four million publications in microformat. The libraries provide hundreds of databases and state-of-the-art information services, serving students, faculty, and the surrounding community.
