Recreation & Student Activities
Getting involved in campus life will greatly enhance your college experience. Working closely with the Office of the Dean of Students, student leaders will collaborate on the creation of campus community through a wide range of social and recreational activities and the formation of clubs and organizations.
The Office of the Dean of Students sponsors many programs for the university community including: Student Activities, Clubs and Organizations, Intramural Sports, Informal Recreation, Special Events, and Equipment Loan. Our primary goal is to enhance the quality of life on campus for the student, faculty, and staff by providing a diverse range of programs and facilities to meet your social and recreational needs.
Fitness and Recreation
The Student Center serves as the central gathering place for the campus community. The facility serves as the campus' principal dining center and houses a state-of-the art fitness/recreation facilities and spaces for student activities, meetings, and studying. We also have our own tennis courts on site.
The Wellness Center, located in the Student Center, is an essential part of the Dean of Students' mission to be a leading advocate for well-being through a focus on the whole person. The Wellness Center is designed to promote health through fitness, education, programs and services that aid in maintaining a healthy lifestyle. The Wellness Center includes:

- Multi-station Weight Machine

Recreation Center / Gymnasium
Hours of operation: Monday - Wednesday, 6-11 p.m.; Thursday - Sunday 6-10 p.m. The gymnasium is located on Tuckahoe Road near the entrance.
'Open Rec': Informal Recreation, commonly referred to as 'Open Rec', gives you an opportunity to participate in drop-in activities such as basketball, volleyball, tennis, badminton, and indoor soccer. Weekly schedules are available in the Student Center. The Office of the Dean of Students offers an equipment loan service for students, faculty, and staff.
The inventory consists of the following items:
- Basketballs
- Volleyballs
- Soccer Balls
- Dodgeballs
- Flag Football Equipment
- Badminton Equipment
- Bocce Ball Set
- Floor Hockey Equipment
Items may be checked out with proper University ID at the Wellness Center located in the Student Center or during 'Open Rec' hours in the gymnasium.
A deposit is required for any large amounts of equipment borrowed and/or when borrowing over a weekend. For large amounts of equipment it is recommended that an advanced registration be made with the Office of the Dean of Students.
Intramural Sports offers opportunities for students, faculty, and staff to participate in team and individual sport competitions including flag football, basketball, bowling, volleyball, indoor and outdoor soccer, softball, beach volleyball, badminton and tennis. Special events may include Card Tournaments, Trivia, 3-on-3 Basketball Tournament, 5K Run/Walk, and Extramural Tournaments with local universities and colleges. Click here for more information.
Clubs and student organizations
The University encourages students to create student groups, when the group they are establishing enhances and compliments the University's mission and goals, campus community, and does not duplicate the efforts of a currently recognized student club or organization.

Bicycles Available
Bicycles can be signed out at the Wellness Center in the Student Center from Monday through Friday, 9 a.m. to 5 p.m., and Saturday/Sunday from noon to 6 p.m.
Bicycles should be returned with a week of sign out.
Students must follow the University's guidelines and rules for safe bicycling.
Note that ALL bicycles on campus must be registered and display a Campus Bicycle Permit, as per Stony Brook Southampton policy. Click here for the registration form.
