How to Report an Emergency

If you become aware of a possible emergency situation, please call University Police at 911 or 333 from any on-campus phone, or (631) 632-3333 using a cell phone.

The building fire alarm system is the primary method of alerting building occupants about an emergency that requires an evacuation

Safety Warden Program

Safety Wardens are volunteers who assist with communications, evacuation, and coordination of people during emergencies. Safety warden teams are organized by building; building managers serve as building emergency coordinators.

Emergency Communications

In case of an emergency, information will be communicated to the campus community in the following ways:

Fire Alarm Systems: Fire alarms will be activated to alert occupants of a fire or other emergency situation that may require an evacuation. Listen to your Building Manager for direction on how to proceed.

Emergency E-Mail Notification System: An e-mail listserv "E-Notify-L" has been set up to send emergency notifications to Stony Brook students, faculty, and staff who choose to be notified by e-mail. The system uses a listserv to deliver emergency messages to participants' e-mail, cell phone, or other wireless device that has text messaging. (Note: To receive emergency messages via e-mail, you must send an e-mail request from that e-mail account.) To sign up, send the following e-mail message to:

Type the following instruction in the first (command) line of your note. Substitute your first and last name as indicated. Do not include any other information:

To receive emergency messages on your cell phone or other wireless device that accepts text messages, you must send an e-mail to one of the Emergency Coordinators and provide the e-mail account that is used to receive messages on that device. Pedestrian Safety:

  • Use a marked crosswalk when one is available
  • Stop before proceeding across a roadway
  • Use sidewalks when they are available
  • On roads without sidewalks, walk on the left, facing traffic
  • When walking at night, wear something reflective or carry a flashlight
  • Do not use MP3 players (iPods) or cell phones when crossing an intersection
Traffic Safety:
  • Obey all posted traffic signs on campus
  • Be sure to come to a full stop at every STOP sign
  • Remember to slow down when driving on campus
  • Don’t forget to watch for and yield to pedestrians
  • Don’t pass vehicles stopped at crosswalks
Bicycle Safety:
  • Always wear protective gear: helmet, knee pads and elbow pads
  • At night or in bad weather conditions, wear light-colored clothing and something reflective. Be sure your bicycle has a light in front and reflectors that are visible from the sides and rear of the bicycle
  • Obey the rules of the road. Bicyclists in roadways follow the same traffic rules as cars and should drive in the same direction as traffic, although as far to the right as possible, unless making a left-hand turn
  • Know and use hand signals for stops and turns. Have a good rear-view mirror and use it.
    At busy intersections, it is safer to dismount from your bicycle and walk across the intersection
  • Do not assume that drivers see you or that they will give you the right-of-way. Be aware of the cars around you
  • Avoid using County Road 39. There are no side walks and the road has heavy traffic

Severe Weather

Severe weather events, such as a hurricane, tropical storm, nor’easter, blizzard, ice storm or severe thunderstorms, can cause dangerous conditions (strong winds, heavy rain, extreme cold, ice, etc.) and loss of services (electric power, heat, air conditioning, water, etc.). The effects of severe weather can cause injury to personnel and damage to facilities, equipment and supplies.

  • Please take appropriate precautions in winter storms and when surfaces are slick with snow or ice
  • Early darkness and blinding sunlight pose particular challenges for motorists, who should reduce speed and increase vigilance
  • Be aware of the heavy pedestrian traffic on campus as you drive, and exercise caution near footpaths and crossings
  • New traffic patterns and signage may have altered your habitual routes; ensure that you pay full attention even on familiar journeys

The best way to prevent injuries and damage is to plan ahead, stay informed, and take immediate action appropriate for the particular type of storm.

Before the Storm:

  • Develop and/or review emergency plans for your area
  • Have emergency supplies on hand
  • Flashlight and extra batteries
  • Portable, battery-operated radio and extra batteries
  • First aid kit and manual
  • Emergency food and water
  • Non-electric can opener
  • Essential medicines
  • Cash and credit cards
  • Sturdy shoes
  • Clothes

Residents will be given the following guidelines for Hurricane/Storm Safety:
  • Use surge protection for all computer equipment if in use, otherwise unplug electrical items
  • Close and lock all windows
  • Lock ALL doors bedroom and suite/apartment doors. The university is not responsible for theft or loss of items during or after a storm
  • Candles or other flame-type lighting should not be used; fire safety is very important during a storm
  • Cars should be locked; windows closed, and set the emergency brakes
  • If a power outage occurs, buildings with kitchens should make sure stoves are off
  • If a tree falls on your car please contact campus operations so they can assist in the removal of the tree. Please do not attempt to remove the tree yourself.

Blackouts

'Stay Put' until notified by your Safety Warden, Resident Advisor or area administrator.
Flashlights and emergency equipment will be available and may be distributed when required.

Sheltering

Students will be notified by Stony Brook Southampton when to leave and evacuate their locations. Follow the severe weather instructions to stay informed.

Marine Science Center Safety Tips

Students, Faculty and Staff of Stony Brook University may have access to the grounds of the Marine Sciences Research Center Complex and the Floating Dock south of the building complex, next to the boat ramp and Marine Railroad.

Access after dark is restricted to authorized personnel only. There is no swimming permitted.

Sailboats and Kayaks are for the use of approved individuals.

Access to the docks and boats of Marine Sciences Research Center is not permitted. These are the docks and boats north of the Marine Railroad.

Red Emergency Phone is located on the south exterior of Lab M S 1 near the flag pole.
Student parking is in the Town Lot south of the Complex.
