SOLAR

SOLAR stands for Student Online Access to Records. This is where you:

  • Register for classes
  • Set your NetID password
  • Establish an email address for official university communications
  • Access personal information
  • Pay your bill
  • Get your grades
  • Apply for financial aid
  • Access transcripts and other official records

  • When you first login to SOLAR, enter your Stony Brook Southampton ID number (which may be found on your student ID card) and your password, which is initially set as your birth date in MMDDYY format.

    NetID

Your NetID is used for accessing Blackboard, Resnet and your MySBfiles, a 500MB network file storage and web space for students, faculty and staff. NetID is also used to log into SINC site services and library databases, and is used for wireless access.

Your NetID password expires every six months, so it must be reset. To find your NetID password, login to SOLAR and click 'NetID Maintenance,' located under 'Security and Personal Data.'

    SPARKY EMAIL

Sparky is the system used for student email accounts, which allows you to access the Internet from on and off campus, and to send and receive email. You may also access your Sparky account via a web browser.

Students will find their userid and initial password in SOLAR in the Email area just below the NetID Information Section. Your userid is the same as your NetID (truncated to 8 characters), and your password is set separately and is NOT the same as your NetID password.

Your email address is formatted as userid@ic.sunysb.edu

    - or -

can be used in EPO format: Firstname.Lastname@stonybrook.edu

which forwards to the ic.sunysb.edu address.

    ANTIVIRUS SOFTWARE

Students are encouraged to install Symantec Antivirus on their machines.  You can download Symantec at no cost from Stony Brook’s software distribution site: http://softweb.cc.sunysb.edu
