Safe cycling, skateboarding and roller skating
Guidelines and rules for safe bicycling, skateboarding, and roller skating at Stony Brook Southampton:
- Bicycles are not to be parked inside buildings where they may block emergency egress or handicap access, including corridors, stairways, or in front of posted fire exits
- Riding bicycles, skateboards and roller skates indoors is prohibited
- Riding of skateboards and roller skates for recreational purposes is prohibited on University property. Skateboards and roller skates may only be used for transportation purposes and only on sidewalks that are clear of pedestrian traffic. See University Policy #P 60.
- Bicyclists have the same responsibilities as motor vehicle drivers, including obeying stop signs and one-way traffic flow
- Bicyclists, skateboarders, and roller skaters must yield the right of way to pedestrians
- Crossing Route 27, Route 27A, Tuckahoe Road, or other busy streets in the area should be done with caution and it is recommended that bicyclists dismount and walk their bicycles across these intersections
- Bicyclists should always drive defensively. In an accident with a car or with the road itself, the bicyclist typically loses

- When riding at night or in darkness due to bad weather, bicycles must have a white light visible from at least 500 feet in front of the bicycle and a red reflector visible from 600 feet to the rear
- A bicycle must have a brake that allows it to skid on dry, clean, level pavement
- Students must provide locks for their bikes
Note that ALL bicycles on campus must be registered and display a Campus Bicycle Permit, as per Stony Brook Southampton policy. Click here for the registration form.
