Message from President Samuel L. Stanley Jr., M.D.

Stony Brook University is comprised of a remarkable community of students, faculty, staff, and visitors who spend varying amounts of time here. For many our campus is their “home away from home.” Campus safety is a top priority and we will continue to work hard in order to make Stony Brook a safe community for all.

In accordance with New York State’s Consolidated Education Laws and SUNY Policy 5401, the 2013-14 Campus Safety Advisory Committee, will review current campus security policies and procedures and make recommendations for their improvement. The Committee shall specifically review current policies, plans and procedures for:

  1. educating the campus community, including security personnel and those persons who advise or supervise students, about sexual assault pursuant to §6432 of Article 129-A of NYS Education Law;
  2. educating the campus community about personal safety and crime prevention;
  3. reporting sexual assaults and dealing with victims during investigations;
  4. referring complaints to appropriate authorities;
  5. counseling victims; and
  6. responding to inquiries from concerned persons.

The Committee has been asked to identify and recommend strategies for the prevention of sexual harassment and sexual assault.  The Committee will report their findings and recommendations to me at the end of the academic year. This report will be available upon request by contacting the President’s Office at (631) 632-6265.
