KEY POINTS TO COVER IN ALCOHOL EMERGENCY TRAINING
The Red Watch Band initiative is designed to debunk three primary myths about binge drinking on college campuses:
Myth 1: Binge drinking is just partying. Nothing bad ever really happens.
FACT: Binge drinking is toxic drinking
Myth 2: If someone passes out after alcohol use, it's best to just to let him or her sleep it off.
FACT: Someone who is passed out from alcohol use needs immediate medical attention.
Myth 3: If I call for help, I or someone else might get in trouble for using alcohol.
FACT: NOT calling for help may result in someone's death — a death that is one hundred percent preventable.
We encourage you to develop a training outline that is specific to your community and one that will resonate with your audience.
We recommend that you include the following areas in your training:
- CPR training.
- Facts about alcohol as a drug.
- Review of your institution's alcohol and other drug use policy including the possible sanctions or amnesty that is covered in the institution's conduct code.
- Debunking of alcohol "first-aid" myths (e.g. drinking coffee, eating, sleeping it off, etc.)
- Phone numbers for campus-based resources.
- Role plays of making the call.
