Selecting Stony Brook University's Fifth President

Welcome to the Stony Brook University Presidential Search Website.

At a relatively young age, Stony Brook University has joined the ranks of the elite in higher education. In fifty short years, our leadership, faculty, staff and students have all helped make Stony Brook one of the top public research universities in the nation. We owe President Shirley Kenny a tremendous debt of gratitude for her fourteen years of leadership, during which so much has been accomplished. Our past has indeed been remarkable, but our future holds even more potential and promise.

Under the guidance of a broad-based search committee, our University now has an opportunity to seek out presidential candidates who share our collective passion and vision for Stony Brook. We invite the candidacies of accomplished men and women who understand our mission and share our passion for the future. Information for these potential candidates is available here. Stony Brook University is the crown jewel in State University of New York system. Its reputation for academic and research excellence is international in scope, and Stony Brook is poised for a new leader who will help take it to the next level among the premier public research universities in the world.

I am pleased to say that the search for the next president of our great university is off to a terrific start. We are grateful to the men and women of the search committee who have offered to spend countless hours on behalf of the university in an effort to recruit the best candidates possible to this coveted position. Much work has already been done. A first-rate search firm, Russell Reynolds, a firm with a particular expertise in major AAU universities, has been retained. A position profile for the presidency has been developed with the input of many interested and concerned Stony Brook stakeholders, gathered at public forums, by email, and by other discussions and conversations that have been occurring throughout the campus.

We thank you for your interest and input. The challenges are many, but we are confident that under the stewardship of our next president, Stony Brook University will continue its upward trajectory into the ranks of nation’s top universities.

Sincerely,

Richard T. Nasti ’78 Chair, Stony Brook Council
