Special tournaments are scheduled for badminton, squash, tennis, wallyball, and racquetball. Individuals as well as teams are encouraged to participate in intramurals. Teams are usually formed from residence hall groups, Greek student organizations, student organizations, and often simply a group of friends.

"Open Rec"
Informal recreation, commonly referred to as "Open Rec," gives you the opportunity to participate in drop-in activities such as basketball, volleyball, badminton, indoor soccer, racquetball, squash, swimming, and fitness activities. Weekly schedules are available through the Department of Campus Recreation and on our Web site.

Fitness Programs and Non-Credit Instruction
These activities include sports demonstrations, fitness training sessions, and classes designed around a specific activity. Demonstrations and instruction activities include tennis, racquetball, badminton, and martial arts. Non-credit classes are scheduled in the Dance Studio for aerobics, aikido, body sculpting, kickboxing, step-aerobics, and yoga.

Sport Clubs
A comprehensive Sport Clubs Program is an integral part of campus recreation. It fills the void between intramural sports activities and intercollegiate athletics. Sport clubs give members of the University community an opportunity to participate in highly competitive sports activities, learn new skills, improve skill level, and enjoy the recreational and social benefits derived from sports involvement. Sport clubs are formed by individuals motivated by a common interest and desire to participate in a favorite sports activity. A sport club may be oriented toward competition, teaching, recreation, or solely for social purposes.

The success of the Sport Clubs Program depends upon the student leaders of the individual clubs. They must have the initiative and drive to handle club administrative matters and motivate club members to take part in various club activities. Without student interest there would be no sport clubs. The following sport clubs are recognized at Stony Brook: badminton, ballroom dance, belly dancing, Boston-style Tae kwon do, bushido self defense, capoeria, chess, Chinese checkers, cricket, crew, cycling, equestrian, fencing, ice hockey, kumdo, kung fu, men’s rugby, outdoors club, shotokan karate, ultimate frisbee, volleyball, women’s rugby, and wrestling.
