Banks
Banking facilities are available on campus. Teachers Federal Credit Union (632-4600), located on the lower level of the Student Activities Center, offers checking and savings accounts as well as ATM access. Teachers Federal Credit Union (631-444-3400) is also located on Level 2 of the Health Sciences Center. Branches of regional banks are located in the adjoining community.
University Bookstore
The University Bookstore offers both new and used textbooks, reference books, study aids, general books, computer software, school supplies, back packs, art supplies, engineering supplies, residence hall living supplies, gifts and novelties, clothing with the Stony Brook logo, class rings, toiletries, stationery, candy and snacks. The University Bookstore, located on the lower level of the Melville Library, offers the following services:
Prepackaged Textbook Program: Save time and money; have your books waiting for you! Reserve your textbooks online. Pre-order customers get first selection of all used books in stock. Used books save you up to 25 percent off new book prices. Reservations must be received 30 days prior to the start of classes. Once your textbook reservation and class schedule are submitted, you will be contacted to confirm your request.
Bookstore Campus Account: This taxable debit account offers you the convenience of purchasing textbooks and school supplies in the University Bookstore, Matthew’s Health Sciences Center Bookstore, and Seawolves MarketPlace without carrying cash. Just present your University ID card. The Bookstore Campus Account can be opened in $100 increments ranging from $200 through $1,000 per semester. The amount you select is charged to your student account and may be deferred against financial aid or paid in monthly installments using the University’s Time Option Payment Plan (TOPP). The Health Sciences Center Bookstore
Matthew’s Health Sciences Center Bookstore on East Campus provides health sciences students with the materials, equipment, and supplies they need for their particular areas of study. Disability Support Services
The Disability Support Services Office (DSS) assists and provides services for
students in accessing the many resources of the University. Individuals with visual, mobility, and hearing impairment, as well as those with hidden disabilities such as chronic medical conditions or psychological and learning disabilities, are invited to make use of the services and equipment available. University ID Card
The photo for your Stony Brook University card will be taken during summer orientation. If you are a resident student, you may pick up your card when you check into your room. If you are a commuter student, you may pick up your card at the Campus Card Office in Room 103 of the Administration Building at the start of the semester. Campus Card Services
Identification: This card is the official identification for Stony Brook University.
Library: The 16-digit number on the front of the Campus Card is your library patron number. This number is encoded on the magnetic strip on the back of your Campus Card and is swiped through the readers at any library location. If you should have any problems/questions about the library number or have an issue with the use of the new card, please go to the Main Circulation Desk at either the Melville or Health Sciences Center Library. Dining Services (Meal Plan): The 16-digit number on the front of your new Campus Card is your meal plan or dining service number. This is also encoded on the magnetic strip on the back of your Campus Card and can be read at any dining location on campus. If you should have a problem with the card at a dining location, please report it first to the Meal Plan Office at 632-6517.
Laundry and Vending Debit Purchases and Library Fines: Two "purses" are included on the chip of your Campus Card. Purse No. 1 is to be used for purchasing laundry services and vending items, as well as for paying library fines. This purse can be loaded with a maximum of $50. As a purchase is made or a fine paid, this amount is deducted from the purse balance. Important: This purse is not retrievable! If you lose this card, you lose this money.
Banking Services: All card holders can become members of the Teachers Federal Credit Union. The University has partnered with TFCU to provide banking services. The new smart card doubles as an ATM/debit card. Those wishing to take advantage of these services will receive a free checking account with a $50 deposit into a TFCU savings account. Copy Center
Copying and other document services are available through Kinko’s, located on the lower level of the Melville Library. Hours are 8:00 a.m. to 5:00 p.m. Kinko’s services can also be accessed at any time through their Web site at www.kinkos.com.
Laundry Facilities
Laundry facilities which consist of coin- and debit-card operated washers and dryers are conveniently provided on the premises of all campus residence locations. Students can save money by using their ID cards at resident laundry facilities. Via use of the card, washing and drying costs $1.15 (regularly $1.25 using cash). For answers to problems or questions, or to report a malfunctioning machine, call the "c-l-e-a-n" line at 2-5326.
The FSA Laundry Account uses a stripe on the ID card that stores replenishable declining balance information. After adding money to the card through one of the conveniently located Cash-to-Account machines, it can be used at resident and apartment laundry facilities. Cash-to-Account machines are located at all resident area dining halls, the Stony Brook Union lobby, the Administration Building, Chapin Apartments, and Schomberg Apartments Commons Building. If the ID card is lost or stolen, you do not lose you laundry account balance. To add money to your account, visit laundry services online. If the ID card is malfunctioning, go to the ID Office in room 103 of the Administration building or call 632-2737.
Phone Service
The University operates its own telephone system. Each student bedroom is wired for incoming service, free voice mail, and free on-campus calling. Call (631) 632-9050 for more information.
Post Office
For all your snail-mail needs, a full-service U.S. Post Office is located on the lower level of the Student Activities Center.
Seawolves MarketPlace
The Seawolves MarketPlace is located adjacent to the main lobby in the Student Activities Center. It offers everything you need to get your computer connected to the internet and television hooked up, plus software for Maple, Mini Tab, Mathematica, SPSS, and distribution CDs for campus licensed programs including: Lotus Notes, Norton's Anti-Virus, Internet Explorer, and Netscape. The MarketPlace carries Stony Brook and Seawolves clothing and merchandise, ipods, laundry detergents, cleaning supplies, health/beauty aids, linens, computer cables and accessories, school supplies, stationery, and gifts. It features Green Mountain Coffee, assorted fresh bakery items, espresso and cappuccino, grab-and-go food and beverages, Kosher meals, Asian snack foods, plus an abundance of items used for everyday campus living. For your convenience, the Seawolves MarketPlace accepts the Bookstore Campus Account, the Faculty/Staff Flexible Spending Account (Bonus Points) as well as cash, checks and major credit cards.
