To the Campus Community:
All of us at Stony Brook University have been anxiously watching and waiting as news of the devastation caused by the magnitude-8.9 earthquake, tsunami and emergency conditions surrounding the Fukushima nuclear reactor continues to be reported out of Japan.
We have been in contact with each of our (six) students studying in Japan, all of whom are reported to be safe. We are working with authorities to make sure they have resources to return home if they so choose. We have also been in touch with and are providing resources to the 56 Japanese degree-seeking, exchange, and certificate program students currently at Stony Brook University.
Stony Brook has many close professional and academic ties to Japan as well, and we are in touch daily with contacts in those areas. Those working in Japan under a Stony Brook alliance also have the option of returning to the States until it is safe to return to Japan to continue their work.
As Stony Brook University students, faculty, and staff struggle to comprehend the breadth of devastation caused by this natural disaster, the question we are all asking is: How can we help?
A University organized response team is now in place, anchored with resources from the Japan Center at Stony Brook University (JCSB) and through the Office of the Dean of Students. We have launched this Web site, which describes the support services and resources available to our students, faculty, staff, and alumni who want to get involved. Relief efforts and methods of assistance to Japan are listed on that website. The site will be updated as new information becomes available.
We cannot yet know the full extent of this tragedy, but we can try to help.
