The IAB approved the draft budget for the 2007-2008 academic year.
The Revised Bylaws were adopted.
March 26, 2007:
The AD reported that Stony Brook has joined the Big South football conference starting in 2008.
The AD reported that renovations to the Basketball Arena in the Sports Complex will start in April 2008.
The FAR reported on graduate school admissions for our student-athletes. One has been accepted into the Stony Brook Nursing program, which accepts only 24 students each year. Another will be studying Political Science at the University of Chicago.
There have been only 7 minor violations of NCAA policy, all inadvertent, in the past year. This is a very low level given the complexity of NCAA regulations.
April 29, 2007:
The AD reported that spring sports are doing well. Both Lacrosse teams have made the America East playoffs, and Baseball is heading that way.
The AD reported that plans to renovate the arena after the end of the 2008 Basketball Season are proceeding.
The Board thanked the three members whose terms expired with this meeting, Mr. Brendan Callahan, Prof. Martin Levine, and Ms Emma Mack, for their service to the IAB.
The IAB will next meet in late September. Have a good summer.
September 24, 2007:
The Board welcomed its new members, Prof. Floris Cash, Greg Khanzadian, Prof. Martin Levine (returning), and Dr. Jerrold Stein.
The AD reported that the fall sports are off to a good start.
October 23, 2007:
The Board welcomed Priya Borker to the IAB as the non-athlete student representative.
The AD reported that the Department will be hiring another full time academic advisor, to concentrate on Football. Student groups are being encouraged to plan activities around the football games in order to raise student awareness of the intercollegiate athletics program, and to increase attendance. The next big push will be to improve community attendance.
Men's Basketball Coach Steve Pikiell spoke about the changes that evolved from being in Division III for 40 years and the move to Division I ten years ago. We are still the new kid on the block, and need to aggressively promote ourselves. More local coaches are visiting campus, and are leaving with favorable impressions. Stony Brook has had only one winning season in the last 17. There has been a significant change in the culture in the past 2 years: the GPA has increased from 2.1 to nearly 2.8, and the APR has increased from 804 to 978. We are also raising our athletic standards: after playing only 2 top 25 teams in the previous 25 years, we have played 7 in the past 2 years, and play Kentucky this year.
The FAR reported that he will attend the FAR convention next month, and has been appointed to the Transfer Committee, which looks into questions of eligiblity of transfer students. At the request of the FAR, the Student-Athlete Development Committee will not be populated this year.
The Compliance Committee will meet in November to review the annual report to the NCAA.
November 20, 2007:
The AD presented a wrap-up of the fall sports seasons. Women's Soccer finished fourth in the conference. Volleyball had a great year and lost in the Conference finals. Stony Brook hosted the Cross Country Conference Championships. Women's Cross Country was in the top 30 in the country and went to the NCAA for the first time in Stony Brook history. Men's Soccer and Football did as expected. There was of whether we've been playing over our heads in Football, against programs that offer full scholarship support. Fours of football's losses were to teams with the maximum allowable number of scholarships.
The renovation of the Arena will begin in April; locker rooms are being renovated now. The cost of the renovation is borne partly by the State and partly from a private donation. The playing surface of the stadium will have to be replaced in 2-3 years.
Heath Senour, Assistant Athletic Director for Compliance, told the Board just what compilance with NCAA rules entails. His job is to keep Stony Brook Athletics out of the newspaper in any negative way. He gave an overview of the three major issues of what compliance does: recruiting, eligibility and financial aid.
Dan Melucci reported that the Core Compliance Committee met on November 6. They reviewed the annual report to the NCAA. There were 7 rules violations in the past quarter, all minor.
Randy Susman reported on the FAR meeting. The emphasis this year was on the APR. Stony Brook atheltics is doing very well.
