Message from the Director of Athletics

As the Director of Athletics for Stony Brook University, I am proud to represent our university, our alumni, our student-athletes and our entire Stony Brook community. Since arriving on campus more than four years ago, my staff and I have been committed to operating an Athletics Department based on the core principles of integrity and class. Excellence in the classroom, sportsmanship on the field, competitiveness against our rivals, and compassion within our community, all define who we are as a department. We are dedicated to building a program that brings honor to the university and is a credit to the extended community.

Our daily focus is simple … to represent ourselves with dignity in everything we do, increase revenue (enabling us to support our programs at the level necessary to be successfully competitive), provide a positive meaningful educational experience for every student-athlete, operate with integrity, support the mission of the University and create an atmosphere of loyalty to family and team. As a department, we have five words that capture what we are about: Commitment, Passion, Pride, Respect, and Swagger. These
words reflect who we have become and how our student-athletes, coaches and staff represent themselves on a daily basis.

As we strive to meet the high expectations we have for Stony Brook University Athletics, I am happy to have the support and counsel of the members of the Intercollegiate Athletics Board (IAB) joining us on this journey. As a dedicated group of Stony Brook faculty, staff, students, alumni, student-athletes, coaches and University administrators, the IAB offers insight, value, and support for the mission of the Department of Athletics. As we embrace and address the financial, and political challenges of operating a world class University, as well as a competitive Division I intercollegiate athletics program, it is reassuring to know that a committed cadre of individuals are ready to assist us in reaching our goals.

Operating any successful enterprise, albeit, a university or an athletics department requires the dedication and efforts of many talented people. Utilizing the collaborative efforts of my staff, as well as the members of the IAB, further ensures that we continue to travel the road to even greater success in the classroom, on the playing field, and in the community.

I would like to publicly thank the members of the IAB, as well as the friends and benefactors of Stony Brook Seawolves Athletics. You have been instrumental in allowing us to experience tremendous growth as a Division I institution. Your future advocacy is needed to help us continue on our path to excellence.

I look forward to seeing all of you at our athletic events, participating in fundraising opportunities, and sharing in events that serve to strengthen our ties with the community and prepare our student-athletes for futures after graduation. Once you are familiar with the IAB website, I hope you will take the time to get to know us better by visiting our athletics website at www.goseawolves.org.

As always, wear red and Go Seawolves!

With best wishes to you, I am, sincerely,

James D. Fiore
