HEALTHIER U WALKING PROGRAM

Get ready to walk your way to a Healthier U!

The Healthier U walking program kicked off in November 2011 with a series of walks at five locations. The kickoff series was a success, thanks to all of you!

WALK ON WEDNESDAYS

"Walk on Wednesdays" is a series of walks held at 12 noon each Wednesday. Meet in the main lobby of the hospital on East Campus, at the fountain on the academic mall on West Campus, or at Tech Park outside the cafeteria at 31 Research Way.

As of Jan. 8, 2013:

  • 534 Stony Brook employees are registered
  • We’ve walked an average of 35,317 steps per person
  • In total, Healthier U registrants have walked 8,456 miles, or 18,859,288 steps
  • Stony Brook University Ranks 3,292 out of 7,674 companies using startwalkingnow.org

To encourage participation, FREE pedometers are being given to the first 500 employees who sign up!

You can sign up by visiting the American Heart Association’s website, www.startwalkingnow.org. The site gives you a variety of useful tools to track distances walked, create your own walking trails, nutrition diary and much more!

To register, click 'Become a Member.' On the registration page, under 'Search for Company,' be sure to select 'STONY BROOK' (All Uppercase) as your employer. Under 'Preferences,' make sure to check the box that allows your employer to see your name, department, email address and physical activities, so that you will qualify for your Free pedometer and so we can track your progress and alert you when you have won a prize!
No one will see your health information, only the miles you enter.

Once you have registered and picked up your pedometer, don’t forget to log your steps at least once a week! Just log onto www.startwalkingnow.org with your unique username and password, click on “Tracker,” and once the tracker dashboard opens, on the lower left side click “Add an Activity.” Make sure to reset your pedometer daily by pushing the red button. You can enter your total steps daily or write them down every day, then enter your weekly total and convert the steps to miles.

HSC/Hospital: Employee Health & Wellness, Hospital Level 3, Room 557 
Tech Park: Human Resources Department, 3 Technology Drive

Indoor & Outdoor Walking Trail Maps
For your convenience, the Healthier U Walking Program has provided several indoor and outdoor walking trail maps of various campuses with the equivalent of laps in miles!

Indoor walking trails are available during the winter to keep you on pace toward meeting your goals. The following indoor walking locations are available:

  • The Student Activities Center on West Campus (first floor)
  • The Administration building on West Campus (Level 3)
  • The Indoor Sports Complex on West Campus (upper level track)
  • The Charles B. Wang Asian American Center (Gallery Level)
  • The Wellness Walk on the 2nd floor of the Health Sciences Center
