Welcome to Healthier U!

Healthier U is Stony Brook University's exciting wellness initiative for employees. It's a program designed to address your total well-being — mind, body and spirit.

Healthier U is based on an online employee survey conducted in July 2011. A follow-up survey was conducted in September 2013.

The top priorities identified in both surveys were:

  • Work/life balance (14.6% increase vs. 2011)
  • Stress management (27.7% increase vs. 2011)

In response, we launched the Healthier U website, which serves as the primary resource for all information about the Healthier U employee wellness program. It also promotes the rich scope and variety of other health and wellness programs campus-wide.  Learn about the dimensions of wellness.

Our first initiative, the Healthier U walking program, kicked off in November 2011 with a series of walks at five locations: the University Main Campus Academic Mall, Long Island State Veterans Home, Ambulatory Surgery Center, School of Dental Medicine and Tech Park. To encourage participation for this free program, the first 500 employees received free pedometers.  Since that time, programs have been developed to address a variety of employee health concerns.  Over the past two years, Healthier U has organized nearly 80 events, including workshops, health screenings, educational programs and fairs.  Nearly 2500 SBU employees have participated in Healthier U programs.  The "Walk on Wednesdays" program, which was launched in the fall of 2012, has grown immensely in popularity, from 450 instances of participation in 2012 to more than 900 instances in 2013.

Join your fellow employees and participate in our Walking Program to become a Healthier U!  There are many incentives and walking competitions each year.  Plus many new walking routes; both indoor and outdoor have been added including off-site and on our Southampton campus.

Visit our Programs and Events page to take advantage of many health and wellness opportunities.  If you have expertise in wellness feel free to submit a program application to Healthier U.  Also, get involved by joining our new Ambassador Program.

We look forward to working together to support a Healthier U!
