Stony Brook Foundation: Mission & HistoryMission Statement
The mission of the Stony Brook Foundation is to advance the mission and goals of Stony Brook University by facilitating, accepting, and managing philanthropic gifts and grants for the benefit of the University, the University Medical Center, and the Long Island State Veterans Home.Foundation History
Established in 1965, the Stony Brook Foundation is a privately governed, 501(c)(3), nonprofit corporation whose mission is to raise and manage private funds on behalf of Stony Brook University. The Foundation is classified as a public charity.
The Stony Brook Foundation plays a vital role in making sure that all donations made for the benefit of the University are used efficiently and that its endowment funding is invested intelligently. The Foundation helps to transform the vision of our donors, faculty, and students into reality, and we are proud of our strong track record in doing so.
More than 95 percent of non-endowed funds donated to the Foundation last year went directly toward benefiting the University, and our lean overhead helped us to maximize the impact of donor dollars on the initiatives and programs they supported.
Scholarship and fellowship donors should know that 100 percent of their donations continue to go directly to our students. The Stony Brook Foundation helped to provide more than $2.1 million in scholarship awards during the 2008-09 academic year. Our impact on students and the University increases yearly as our donors make new accomplishments possible.
Through shrewd investment and careful stewardship of the endowment, the Stony Brook Foundation also plays a key role in sustaining the University’s tradition of excellence. The Stony Brook Foundation strengthens the University by serving the people who generously give us the resources to be successful: our donors.
Today, the Foundation manages an endowment of more than $95.4 million and has total assets of more than $235.5 million (and growing!).
Please note: The Stony Brook Foundation does not make grants to other organizations or individuals and does not accept funding requests.
