Dr. Rigas is developing a series of innovative agents for the prevention of cancer, aiming to spare those at risk of cancer the pain and suffering associated with its clinical manifestations. To date Dr. Rigas has invented three classes of novel anticancer agents, with four compounds about to enter clinical trials; his chemopreventive agents combine high efficacy, remarkable safety and low cost, which may facilitate their use worldwide. Dr. Rigas also has pioneered the application of infrared spectroscopy to the diagnosis of cancer and co-developed infrared microscopy.
Dr. Rigas is a clinically active physician-scientist and his gastroenterology textbook, translated into multiple languages, is used around the world. He serves or has served as an advisor to several public and private organizations in the United States and abroad, such as Cancer Research UK, and is the recipient of numerous awards. He has published nearly 200 scientific papers and has 38 patents or patent applications.
