Dr. Yusuf A. Hannun, MD
Joel Strum Kenny Professor in Cancer Research
Dr. Hannun has one overarching goal: To develop a cancer center that makes a difference in the study and practice of cancer medicine—at Stony Brook and around the world. Dr. Hannun will build on the Cancer Center's existing strengths to create a world-class cancer program by expanding clinical programs, more fully integrating research with clinical care, spearheading facility expansion, transforming the Center into a basic and translational research hub, and recruiting new physicians and investigators.
Dr. Hannun's research focuses on the lipid mediators of cancer cell signaling, and he has contributed to more than 460 scholarly publications. He has developed analytical techniques that have furthered the challenging study of substances that are only fat soluble. His work has impacted not only research in cancer, but also research in neurobiology, inflammation and metabolism.
Dr. Hannun has been elected to the American Society for Clinical Investigation
and the Association of American Physicians, and he has received the prestigious
Avanti Award in Lipids, which recognizes outstanding contributions in the
area of lipid research, from the American Society for Biochemistry and
