Message from President Shirley Strum Kenny
Stony Brook University has always been dedicated to educating and enriching the lives of our diverse family of students, faculty, and staff, and for keeping them healthy, happy, and safe.
Following the events of September 11, keeping our community safe became an even more pressing concern. To further protect our University family, I established an Emergency Task Force to review all the systems and protocols that govern the security of the campus and to extend the provisions of these protocols in response to catastrophes, natural or man-made. As a result, our existing Emergency Management Plan was revised, an Emergency Management Team was created to implement it, and an Emergency Operations Center was established as the headquarters from which operations will be coordinated in the event of a crisis.
I am very pleased to present the revised and updated Emergency Management Plan, which outlines the University's emergency preparedness, response, and recovery procedures. While University safety personnel—including the police, environmental health and safety, and emergency response staff—will be on call and ready to respond to any emergency, each member of the Stony Brook community should also plan ahead to know what they must do before, during, and after an emergency to ensure their own safety and that of those around them.
We all share a great pride in our community and it is up to all of us to help keep our family safe. Please take a few minutes to review the plan and learn what you can to do keep Stony Brook safe.
Shirley Strum Kenny
President
