The School of Marine and Atmospheric Sciences (SoMAS) is the State University of New York's (SUNY) designated center for marine and atmospheric research, education, and public service. More than 100 graduate and 200 undergraduate students from 16 different nations currently work and study at SoMAS. Our students study coastal oceanographic processes and atmospheric sciences in academic settings that encompass two campuses (Stony Brook and Southampton).

Long Island offers a diverse natural laboratory providing abundant opportunities for conducting field work. Our dual mission is to expand our basic understanding of the oceans and atmosphere and to apply that knowledge to the solution of pressing enviromental problems on local, regional, and global scales.
