April 4 - April 13 , 2008 • Charles B. Wang Center, Stony Brook University
Monday through Friday, 12:00 pm to 4:00 pm • Saturdays and Sundays, 1:00 pm to 4:00 pm
From 1892 to 1924, masses of Sicilians left their homes, made the difficult journey across the Atlantic, and passed through Ellis Island to the New World. Some vanished into the vast melting pot of their new country; others established communities that became part of the fabric of American life.
This traveling exhibit, which ran at the Ellis Island Museum from November 2007 to February 2008, sheds light on the Sicilian emigration experience through rare photographs and compelling narrative. One hundred and twenty panels depict the life the immigrants left behind, their arduous ocean crossing, and how they adjusted to their new lives in the United States.
