RECREATION

Campus Recreation-In addition to serving University students, faculty, and staff, the Department of Campus Recreation offers community outreach initiatives and operates various programs and facilities open to the greater community.

Crafts Center-The Stony Brook Crafts Center is the place to be for beginning and advanced classes in basketry, drawing, painting, clay sculpture, weaving, kayaking, bartending, wine appreciation, or defensive driving. Facilities include complete studios for ceramics, photography, and fiber arts. Children's art workshops are held Saturday mornings and summers. Memberships are also available. Classes are held in the lower level of the Stony Brook Union building.

The Downtown Arcade-The Arcade provides a relaxing environment for pool, ping-pong, card games, chess, dominoes, backgammon, video games, and darts. Space for parties and social functions is available. The Arcade is located at the base of the stairs on the lower level of the Stony Brook Union Building.

Indoor Sports Complex-The Indoor Sports Complex is open to the off-campus community when not being used for University classes, sports teams, and scheduled special events. Memberships (both individual and immediate family) are available to the off-campus community for an annual fee. Weekly Sports Complex schedules are provided at the front desk. Facilities available for community members with paid memberships include an indoor upper running track, a general weight room, racquetball courts (reservation required), squash courts (reservation required), pool, and basketball courts. Community members who do not have a Sports Complex membership may pay $5 per visit at the main entrance to the Sports Complex. Applications are available at the main office of the Sports Complex between 9:00 a.m. to 4:30 p.m., Monday through Friday.

The Spot -The Spot is the graduate student lounge, providing a comfortable social environment for all Stony Brook graduate students. Faculty, staff, undergraduates and other members of the community are also welcome. The Spot includes a campus-based performance venue that regularly features live original music, theater, and comedy, as well as alternative and classic film screenings. Programming is varied, reflecting the eclectic interests and tastes of our campus community. A pool table, two dart alleys, tournament chess boards, and a foosball table are also available. The Spot is located on the second floor of the Fannie Brice Theatre Building in Roosevelt Quad. Operating hours are 6:00 p.m.- 12:00 a.m. on Thursdays and 6:00 p.m. - 2:30 a.m. on Fridays and Saturdays.
