PERFORMING ARTS

Adult Chamber Music-These 90-minute workshops take place once a week during September and October and culminate in a recital in the Staller Center Recital Hall. Ensembles for strings, woodwinds, brass, piano, and voice are formed based on participants' similar ability and the best possible instrumentation. Adult musicians of all levels and experience, as well as pre-existing groups, are invited to participate.

Baroque Music-Early music performed on original instruments, featuring nationally and internationally known singers and instrumentalists. All concerts are free; a free-will offering is requested to bolster the Stony Brook Early Music Program.

The Charles B. Wang Center, celebrating Asian and American cultures, is designed as a vital space for multidisciplinary and multicultural dialogues. The 120,000-square-foot building was officially presented to Stony Brook University by Charles B. Wang on October 22, 2002. The Wang Center is used for conferences, art exhibits, film festivals, lectures, seminars, and performances. It is open to all Stony Brook students, faculty, and staff as well as the surrounding community.
It includes exhibit spaces, an inter-denominational chapel, an Asian food court, a theater, two lecture halls, a series of interior and exterior pools and terraces, and more than 35,000 square feet of sprawling gardens.

Choral Ensembles-The Stony Brook choirs (Camerata Singers, Stony Brook Chorale) are well known for their adventurous programming and sensitive performances of choral masterworks. Contemporary Chamber Players-A stunning array of music, from older classics to first performances of newly composed music. These free concerts are held in the Staller Center Recital Hall.

Department of Theatre Arts-The Department presents a full season that explores a range of dramatic possibilities, from classical to avant-garde. Productions feature Stony Brook students. Experimental productions are also held at The Spot, located in the cafeteria of Roosevelt Quad.

Graduate Recitals-Skilled performances by Stony Brook graduate students of a variety of solo and chamber works throughout the academic year. Free admission. A monthly schedule is available in the Staller Center lobby.

Noontime Concert Series-This free series offers a splendid tradition of music-making in the middle of the day with brief, carefully rehearsed student recitals that feature every imaginable ensemble in a varied repertory.

Pre-College Music Program-A curriculum in music theory, aural skills (ear training and sight singing), music analysis, and traditional and computer-based instruction in music composition for students grades 7 to 12. Weekly faculty coaching of small ensembles, including all instruments and voice. Public recitals held at the Staller Center for the Arts give students an invaluable opportunity to perform. The program is held every Saturday, September to June.

The Spot (also known as the Graduate Student Lounge)-The Spot is a comfortable pub offering a specialty grill, fine wines and beers, and great entertainment, featuring some of the best live music on Long Island. It is located on the second floor in Roosevelt Quad. Open Wednesday through Saturday, 6:00 p.m. to 2:00 a.m.

Staller Center for the Arts-There is always an event taking place at Long Island's only arts facility that offers an eclectic mix of live performances and film, including a musical theatre series especially for kids. It also hosts events—featuring gifted students and guest artists—produced by Stony Brook's Departments of Art, Theatre, and Music. The Staller Center sponsors The Summer Film Festival-11 days of new, independent, foreign, classic, art, and big-screen popular film entertainment, all on a 40-foot screen complete with Dolby Stereo sound system.

Stony Brook Jazz Ensemble-Enjoy the cool jazz stylings of this University ensemble.

Stony Brook Opera-A fully produced opera featuring Stony Brook vocal students and the Stony Brook Symphony Orchestra performing scenes from opera favorites. Recent productions have included Puccini's La Boheme and Mozart's Cosi Fan Tutte.

Stony Brook Summer Music Festival-A two-week intensive music program for talented musicians ages 13 to 23, focusing on chamber music. Students receive intensive daily coaching, meet with prominent speakers and performers, and participate in master classes, recording sessions, outdoor concerts, and theory/composition classes. Lodging and dining are provided; local students may commute. The program includes a trip to New York City to attend the Mostly Mozart Festival concert at Lincoln Center, a boat excursion, and beach afternoons. The program ends with a gala concert performance in the Staller Center Recital Hall.

Stony Brook Symphony Orchestra-The orchestra is composed primarily of graduate students who come from all over the world to study with the University's prestigious artists-in-residence. Informative (and free) pre-concert lectures are also held.
