Dental Education (Continuing Dental Education)-The School of Dental Medicine offers continuing education courses for dentists, hygienists, assistants, and laboratory technicians. These courses address a variety of dental topics as they relate to patient care, diagnosis, treatment planning, medical emergencies, pain management, and new advances in implants and esthetics. Courses are offered by faculty from Stony Brook and other dental schools, dentists, and speakers from private industry and research institutes. Lectures, lab simulations, and clinical-based learning are used. The Continuing Dental Education Office is located in the Department of General Dentistry, South Campus, Westchester Hall, Room 143.

Engineering Program for Research and Engineering Partnership (EngiPREP)-Students enrolled at SUNY Old Westbury, SUNY Farmingdale, Suffolk Community College, or Nassau Community College can participate in a research-centered environment designed to help them make the transition from a two-year degree program into a four-year engineering degree program. Students must be of African American, Latino/Hispanic, or Native American/Alaskan/Hawaiian heritage and have a 3.0 GPA and academic coursework completed in a program that meets the requirements for acceptance into a four-year engineering program. The program runs for four weeks during the summer. A stipend is provided.

Graduate Admissions-Graduate study is offered in more than 50 disciplines, as well as through the five schools of the Health Sciences Center and through the School of Professional Development. Life Sciences Greenhouse-This 14,000-square-foot facility houses plants that are used as a resource in teaching and research. The greenhouse staff welcomes the community for tours, horticultural talks, and all gardening inquiries.

Medical Education (Continuing Medical Education)-The Office of Continuing Medical Education offers a broad spectrum of activities addressing a variety of medical topics and utilizing varied instructional methods. These include programs designed to teach new skills using workshops and simulated patient or live-case presentations; to update physicians with new information to improve prevention, diagnosis, and management of diseases; and to provide a comprehensive update and intensive review in a field of medicine. Teleconferencing, monographs, and Web-based and other self-directed learning methods are also available. The Continuing Medical Education Office is located in the School of Medicine, Health Sciences Center, Level 4.

Medical Explorers-A monthly program sponsored by the Boy Scouts of America in collaboration with Stony Brook University Hospital. Health care professionals from different departments and services within University Hospital provide tours, lectures, and presentations for students in the program. Through this experience, students ages 14 to 20 are introduced to various health care professions. Meetings are held on the last Wednesday of every month, from October through May, from 7:00 p.m. to 9:00 p.m.

School of Nursing (Continuing Professional Education)-The School of Nursing's Continuing Professional Education Program was established to meet the educational demands of a diverse local, national, and international adult student population. The program is accredited by the New York State Nurses Association's Council on Continuing Education. Many programs are offered on site and online to help students and professionals meet their educational and career advancement goals.

Office of Undergraduate Admissions-The Office recruits and admits qualified freshmen and transfer students to the University. Professional Education Program (PEP)-The University offers undergraduate and graduate teacher preparation and certification programs in English, foreign languages, mathematics, science, social sciences, and teaching English as a second language. These programs are offered during the fall, spring, and summer semesters.

Project Java-Through this educational program of the Center for High Pressure Research (ChiPR), undergraduate computer science majors create interactive educational software for University credit. The software, which will be posted on the World Wide Web, will be used primarily by secondary school and undergraduate students.

Research Experiences for Undergraduates (REU) in Physics/Astronomy-This program enables 13 undergraduates from Stony Brook and other colleges and universities to gain research experience by working directly with a mentor in physics or astronomy. The program runs from early June to late July, and participants receive a stipend that includes room, board, and travel.

Research Experiences for Undergraduates (REU) Program-Eight undergraduates from Stony Brook and other colleges and universities engage in research at a nearby estuarine environment. The program runs from June 11 to August 3. A stipend is provided to participants.

Summer Education Interns/Summer Scholars-Ten upper-level undergraduates from Stony Brook and other colleges and universities reside on the Stony Brook campus and engage in research projects under the guidance of a geosciences faculty mentor. The educational interns develop lesson plans from their research. The program runs from early June to mid-August, and a stipend that includes rooming is provided.

Summer Sessions-Summer Sessions undergraduate and graduate courses are open to the Long Island community and to students who attend other colleges and universities. In addition, high-achieving high school juniors may enroll in one freshman-level class each summer and receive college credit. Summer Sessions classes are usually scheduled in two consecutive, six-week sessions, and are offered in 35 to 40 subjects.

Wetlands Cruise Aboard the Discovery-Led by a naturalist, the Discovery cruise aboard a passenger pontoon boat provides a field trip in the environmental ecology of Stony Brook Harbor and surrounding wetlands. From the deck, participants observe the glacial moraines, tidal flows, and plants and animals through close-up views and hands-on activities. This cruise is available to the general public and for group booking, and runs from May to October.

Women to Women: A Science Mentoring Network-This program seeks to engage middle school and ninth grade girls in science, math, engineering, and technology studies and careers through a year-long research and mentor experience. The girls work with University women who are undergraduate and graduate students focused on science, math, engineering, and technology studies. A stipend is available for the undergraduate mentors.
