Flowerfield Property Construction Update
On August 15, 2006, a new access and utility road was constructed to provide a temporary entrance/exit to the Flowerfield property from Stony Brook Road.
This new road will provide the most efficient temporary access to the property and, most importantly, will avoid the routing of traffic along the existing road behind the homes on University Heights Drive, as many members of the community had requested.
A construction gate has been erected to control access to the site from Stony Brook Road. This road will provide access to all entering and exiting traffic, including construction vehicles, until a permanent entrance/exit road is built. While no final decision has been made on the precise location of this permanent road, we will continue to work with the Town of Brookhaven and its Traffic Safety Office, which has the expertise to help us decide such issues.
In addition, University police will continue to patrol the grounds of the Research and Development Park, as they do other areas of the University, and will be locking the main gates to the Flowerfield property at 8:00 pm Monday thru Friday and at 9:30 pm on Saturday. The main gates will be locked all day on Sunday. Cleaning and other staff needing access to the property after closing will enter and exit from Mills Pond Road.
The University is also addressing concerns about perceptions of an increase in traffic on the existing perimeter road over the past year. We believe that many of these vehicles are driven by local residents and others using the road as a cut through between Stony Brook Road and Route 25A. University Police will also patrol this road to make sure traffic laws are obeyed and enforced.
