  • Stony Brook faculty members have been responsible for more than 1,400 inventions and more than 400 patents. With 70 academic departments, Stony Brook is among the top 40 institutions funded by the National Science Foundation, and expenditures on Organized Research, from external and internal sponsors, have reached 210 million dollars.
  • Total funds managed at Stony Brook last year exceeded $184 million, reflecting activity in some 1,200 projects involving hundreds of investigators and providing jobs for 1,800 individuals. For the last three years, Stony Brook has been responsible for 95% of the licensing revenues that have won SUNY its top 20 national ranking in technology transfer, according to the Association of University Technology Managers.
  • Stony Brook is one of only 94 institutions in the country to be designated a "Very High Research University" by the Carnegie Foundation.
  • The University co-manages Brookhaven National Laboratory, joining such universities as Princeton, MIT, Cornell, University of California, and University of Chicago that run federal laboratories.
