May 14, 2008: New Endowed Chair in Italian Studies Inaugural Event
An inaugural event for the new Alfonse D'Amato Endowed Chair in Italian and Italian American Studies will be held on Wednesday, May 14, in Ballroom A of the Student Activities Center, from 4:00 pm to 7:00 pm. Peter Carravetta, first holder of the endowed chair, will speak on "Migration, History, Identity."
The endowed chair was created through the efforts of Mario Mignone, director of the Center for Italian Studies at Stony Brook; Rick Nasti, chair of the University Council; UNICO National, an Italian-American national organization; Computer Associates; the Order Sons of Italy; the National Italian American Foundation; Paine & Webber; and individuals interested in Italian culture. Carravetta will promote Italian culture and critical thought, organize conferences, and work toward establishing a doctoral program in European Studies with concentrations in modern Italian area studies, migration studies, Italian American cultural history, and Mediterranean area studies. He will raise funds for scholarships and edit an annual publication on Italian and Italian American scholarship.
