Building for the Future–The Process
The mission of Building for the Future is to anticipate, plan and build to prepare Stony Brook University for academic, infrastructural and quality-of-life growth that will accommodate future generations of Stony Brook students, faculty and staff.
Approach and Timing
Building for the Future will take shape as the Facilities Master Plan (FMP) for Stony Brook University is developed, finalized, and implemented for all Stony Brook University campuses including Main Campus, Medical Center Campus, Research and Development Park, and Southampton.
Overall implementation of the FMP will cover a ten-year period, from 2013 to 2023, and will be completed by February 1, 2011. The work will be conducted in five phases which will culminate in a final document for review and approval by SUNY.
- Phase I - University Profile
Gather information about Stony Brook University and its characteristics, including historical background, academic and strategic mission, statistical data, and its facilities and grounds
- Phase II - Assessment of Conditions
Assess the physical and operating condition of Stony Brook University facilities and grounds
- Phase III - Analysis of Space Needs
Compile and analyze the current and future programmatic needs of the University, and calculate the associated facilities space requirements
- Phase IV - Concept Alternatives
Develop of a minimum of three alternatives for the FMP
- Phase V - Final Recommendations
Develop a final recommendation for the FMP based on comments and issues raised with the concept alternatives
A comprehensive Facilities Master Plan will support Stony Brook University in its mission to achieve the Project 50 Forward goals of Operational Excellence and Academic Greatness. The focus of the FMP will be to:
- Give physical form to Stony Brook’s future academic and research initiatives
- Review, analyze, and optimize all new and existing buildings and infrastructure for all campuses
- Provide the basis for requests for capital expenditures
As the Facilities Master Plan is developed and executed, our Building for the Future mission will benefit from input of the entire the University community. Leading the FMP development process are Stony Brook University top administrators and the State University Construction Fund. Together they have enlisted the expertise of academic space planner Scott Blackwell Page and renowned New York City-based architecture firm Cooper, Robertson & Partners, which has led master planning efforts for other leading research institutions, including Harvard, Yale, MIT, and Caltech. The FMP will cover a ten-year period from 2013 to 2023 and will be completed by February 1, 2011.
The FMP is being guided by an Executive Committee composed of the President, Provost, Vice President for Facilities and Services, CEO of the Medical Center, Senior Vice President for Health Sciences and Dean of the School of Medicine, Chief Deputy to the President, and Assistant Vice President for Facilities and Services.
Role of the Consultants
- Bring an objective, external perspective and breadth of experience to the process
- Support the Executive Committee with data, analysis, insights, and recommendations to make informed decisions
- Provide a plan and cost estimates for recommended facilities improvements and strategic initiatives
Role of the State University Construction Fund
- Directs and approves the work of the consultant team
- Coordinates campus recommendations with budgetary allocations
- Partners with the University to maximize the work of the consultant team
Role of Key Stakeholders
Groups from the various Stony Brook campuses with vested interest in building and critical maintenance of University facilities will be engaged and consulted at each step of the process. These groups include faculty, researchers, graduate students, undergraduate students, and alumni. Additionally, feedback is welcome and appreciated from interested members of neighboring communities, including those who avail themselves of University resources.
