March 28, 2013: University Moving Exclusively to Recycled Paper
Effective April 1, 2013, the University will transition from procurement of 100% virgin copy paper to exclusively paper with post-consumer waste (PCW) content. more »

March 18, 2013: Interview with Andrew White on Library Services
In this interview Dr. Andrew White, Associate CIO for Health Sciences, co-author of E-Metrics for Library and Information Professionals and former Interim Dean of Stony Brook University Libraries, recently appointed, discussed the Project 50 Forward Operational Excellence Libraries Initiative. This included the recent consolidation of the University Libraries and the Stony Brook Medicine Library. He also spoke about other initiatives to increase efficiency, reduce costs,  and add convenience. more »

March 14, 2013: Faculty Advisory Council (FAC) Meeting
A component of Project 50 Forward’s collaborative approach is the periodic meeting of the Faculty Advisory Council (FAC) with the Program Management Office (PMO).  The FAC, created by President Stanley in 2011, is charged with providing critical input, advising on ways to reach out to faculty and ensuring that Operational Excellence recommendations support the continuing needs of the academic and research community. more »

October 11, 2012: Interview with Matt Whelan on Credit Transfer and Degree Audit
The Degree Audit system and new credit transfer process are two Operational Excellence initiatives within Project 50 Forward that use new technologies and streamlined procedures to improve student and faculty services. Degree Audit helps students track credits and fulfill degree requirements, improving time to graduation. The new automated credit transfer process eliminates redundancies and saves time and effort. In this interview, Matthew Whelan, Associate Provost for Enrollment and Retention Management, talks about these new initiatives and how they will benefit both students and faculty. more »

May 4, 2012: Faculty Advisory Council Updated on Automated Employment Applicant Tracking System
At the May 8, 2012, meeting of the Faculty Advisory Council for Project 50 Forward, Lynn Johnson, Vice President of Human Resource Services, and members of the Operational Excellence Program Management Office updated the Council on plans to implement an automated employment applicant tracking system (ATS) to improve the efficiency and effectiveness of the search and selection process.

In an effort to update and upgrade Stony Brook’s IT infrastructure to address contemporary IT needs for student, faculty and staff, this fall the University will begin implementing a system changeover to Google Apps for Education. more »

December 16, 2011: Faculty Advisory Council Updated on Research Administration Initiatives
At the December 16, 2011 meeting of the Faculty Advisory Council for Project 50 Forward, Nancy Daneau, Assistant Vice President for Research Development and Sponsored Programs, and members of the Operational Excellence Program Management Office updated the Council on the progress and plans for the creation of a Research Advisory Faculty Team (RAFT) to facilitate faculty input on administrative activities that impact the research community, and the development of a research portal to enable researchers to access all systems and resources needed to administer their grants through a single Web-based interface. more »

December 2, 2011: Procurement AVP Jim Fabian explains new University eProcurement system
The Operational Excellence Procurement Systems team announces the issuance of the first purchase orders through our new eProcurement system, SciQuest. The goal of this new eProcurement system, dubbed “WolfMart,” is to make ordering faster and easier than ever before, as well as to create a unified portal from which to order using State, IDC, and RF fund sources. It will provide users an online shopping experience similar to that of other eCommerce sites such as Amazon, Priceline, etc., as well as include intuitive electronic order routing of approvals (workflow) and automated Accounts Payable/Receiving settlement. more »

July 22, 2011: Operational Excellence Steering Committee on Strategic Sourcing Initiative
We want to take this opportunity to update the campus community on recommendations emerging from Project 50 Forward - Operational Excellence. Stony Brook has seen cuts to its base budget exceeding $75M over the last few years and the recent optimistic news coming out of Albany will not restore this funding. Over the last year, Project 50 Forward - Operational Excellence has been identifying ways for Stony Brook to be more efficient while preserving the core missions of the University. One of the key focus areas has been the procurement of goods and services, an area where we can take steps to reduce our expenditures by up to $10-14M annually without impacting the University's core missions.

June 2, 2011: Human Resources Initiative Design Team Recommends Changes to Hiring Process
In an effort to improve the efficiency and effectiveness of the hiring process at Stony Brook University, the Human Resources initiative design team recommended to the Project 50 Forward Steering Committee changes in how Stony Brook screens and hires its employees. In response, the Steering Committee authorized the team to proceed with the acquisition and implementation of an automated job applicant tracking system. more »

March 16, 2011: Facilities Master Plan Meetings, Forum Held
On February 18 and 25, 2011, Barbara Chernow, vice president for facilities and services, met with the University Senate Campus Environment Committee and with the Faculty Student Association Board of Directors, respectively, to discuss a draft of the FMP. On February 21, she and David McGregor, a representative from Cooper Robertson & Partners, the architectural firm engaged to prepare the University’s FMP, provided a similar review and analysis of the draft to members of the University Senate Executive Committee. more »

March 16, 2011: Team to Seek Input on E-Procurement System
Based on the results of the diagnostic phase of Operational Excellence, which included feedback from faculty and staff focus groups, the Project 50 Forward Procurement Systems Initiative design team is pleased to announce it is working to deploy a new e-procurement system. The team has a diverse membership of faculty and staff from East and West campuses. more »

March 14, 2011: Committee Announces Next Wave of Initiative Design Teams
During the ongoing design phase of Operational Excellence, initiative design teams will examine opportunities identified during the diagnostic phase completed in the second half of 2010 and will develop detailed recommendations for improvements to be shared with the Steering Committee. Each of these teams will be composed of faculty and staff with related expertise who will facilitate the development of robust solutions. As needed, these groups will reach out to the Stony Brook community to collect additional data and obtain feedback on potential recommendations. March 10, 2011: First Faculty Advisory Council Meeting Held
The Faculty Advisory Council for Project 50 Forward held its first meeting on March 10, 2011.  The Bain consulting team and members of the Operational Excellence Program Management Office reviewed the context, scope, approach and timeline for Operational Excellence, shared a sample of the opportunities to gain efficiency and cost savings identified in the first (diagnostic) phase of the review, which was completed in December 2010, and described the process and organization for the future phases (design and implementation) of the review. more »

February 8, 2011: Initiative Design Team Members Named
In January 2011 the Operational Excellence Steering Committee approved members of three Operational Excellence initiative design teams. These teams, composed of Stony Brook faculty and staff, will examine opportunities identified in the diagnostic phase and develop detailed solutions to benefit the University such as administrative process improvements and cost savings. The members of each of these newly formed teams were selected to provide broad University representation as well as expertise in the functions being reviewed. more »

February 3, 2011: Operational Excellence Enters Design Phase
The diagnostic phase of the Operational Excellence component of Project 50 Forward concluded in December 2010 and the design phase launched in January 2011. Information gathered during the diagnostic phase created a “fact base” on operations for the Steering Committee to identify and prioritize ways Stony Brook can improve the efficiency and effectiveness of many of its departments by simplifying and automating administrative functions, making decision processes more transparent, and streamlining the organization. more »

January 31, 2011: Faculty and Staff Groups Focus on Operational Excellence
This past November five faculty and staff focus groups met and provided feedback on the Operational Excellence component of Project 50 Forward. Each group discussed one of five topics: information technology, administrative services, facilities, procurement, and revenue opportunities. Volunteers were solicited from across the entire Stony Brook community, and 44 faculty members and staff from 32 departments participated in the focus groups.

January 26, 2011: Students Bring Operational Excellence into Focus
In December 2010 three student focus groups—one each representing undergraduate, graduate, and health sciences graduate students—offered feedback on the Operational Excellence component of Project 50 Forward. The focus groups’ goal was to obtain student perspectives on ways Stony Brook administration could enhance its overall effectiveness. more »

November 3, 2010: Project 50 Forward Update
Stony Brook is more than halfway through the diagnostic phase of our Operational Excellence program, during which a fact base is being gathered of our University operations. This information has been gleaned through faculty and staff surveys, interviews, benchmarking, and cost and performance information. We are identifying opportunities from this base to recommend areas and procedures to be revamped and revised to reduce our operating costs.
