Apr. 7, 2011: Faculty Advisory Council Updated on Operational Excellence Initiative

At the April 7, 2011 meeting of the Faculty Advisory Council for Project 50 Forward, the Bain consulting team and members of the Operational Excellence Program Management Office updated the Council on the progress of Operational Excellence initiatives in Facilities Operations, Finance and Budget, Human Resources and Procurement.  Emerging recommendations discussed with the Council include:

  • developing budgeting and reporting systems, processes and metrics that will help the University deploy resources more effectively, with greater accountability and in alignment with our strategic goals;
  • redesigning the employee search and selection process to eliminate bottlenecks by removing steps that do not add value and performing certain tasks concurrently;
  • implementating an online Applicant Tracking System (ATS) to manage the recruitment process from position description to the onboarding of a new hire and to reduce search time and effort significantly;
  • implementing an ongoing strategic procurement process to achieve lower cost procurement of goods and services by standardizing certain types of products purchased by the University and by leveraging the University’s purchasing volume from all funding sources to negotiate improved pricing with vendors;
  • implementing an eProcurement solution to replace the current electronic requisitioning system for State funds and the paper requisitioning process for Research Foundation (RF) funds.  This solution will automate and streamline the procurement process for user departments as well as enable and inform strategic procurement.

President Stanley created the Faculty Advisory Council in February 2011 to: provide critical input to the Operational Excellence Steering Committee, advise on ways to reach out to Stony Brook faculty and ensure that recommendations from the Operational Excellence component of Project 50 Forward support the needs of the academic and research community.

Stony Brook is relying on input from all sectors of the campus community to achieve the goals of Operational Excellence. If you have suggestions to make Stony Brook more effective and efficient, please contact the Project 50 Forward team
