NIH is now approving human embryonic stem cell lines (hESCs) under the NIH Guidelines http://stemcells.nih.gov. for Human Stem Cell Research. Approved lines appear on the NIH Human Embryonic Stem Cell Registry http://grants.nih.gov/stem_cells/registry/current.htm.
Applicants and grantees interested in using approved hESCs should view the Details for lines of interest available at http://grants.nih.gov/stem_cells/registry/current.htm. In the table "Detailed Information for Selected Cell Line" there may be restrictions that apply to the specific line. These are limitations that are placed on the use of the hESC by the provider of the line or by NIH. For example, the provider may restrict the use of the line to noncommercial use only. There may also be limitations due to specific language in the informed consent. Accordingly, grantees must honor all restrictions when using the line.
NIH will place a term on all hESC awards indicating that the grantee may only use those hESCs that appear on the NIH Human Embryonic Stem Cell Registry as eligible for NIH funding, and in accord with any restrictions placed on the use of those lines.
