Stony Brook Southampton Marine Center
Marine Sciences Finds Outlet
to the Sea in Southamption
One
of the world’s leading centers for coastal oceanography now
has an outlet to the sea. An agreement to acquire a new eastern Long
Island venue from Long Island University will make Stony Brook one
of the newest occupants, and the only research university, in Southampton
on the Island’s
South Fork. The Marine Sciences Research Center, the marine and atmospheric
research, education, and public service center for the 64-campus SUNY
system, will lead the first programs at the new site, taking over existing
marine biology facilities including a waterfront marine station on
Shinnecock Bay which provides direct access to the Atlantic Ocean.
The Southampton campus will represent an extension of MSRC: the main
campus will remain in Stony Brook and a portion of the Center’s research
fleet will continue to be docked near the Stony Brook campus in Port
Jefferson on Long Island Sound.
