Institutional Nominations
Some sponsors and grant programs restrict the number of individuals that may be nominated, or applications that may be submitted, by the University. Examples include NSF's Major Research Instrumentation (MRI) Program, the Chicago Community Trust's Searle Scholars Program, and the Pew Charitable Trust's Scholars Program in the Biomedical Sciences. The selection of nominees to these programs is coordinated by the Office of the Vice President for Research. In cases where the number of institutional applications is limited, the OVPR will conduct a competition (as needed) in which potential applicants will be asked to submit a pre-proposal outlining the substance of the application and its budget as well as offering a description of supporting factors (matching funds, participating institutions, etc.) In cases where the University is asked to nominate candidates for an award or fellowship, the Vice President's Office will contact appropriate departmental chairs with a request to submit a dossier on behalf of qualified faculty for consideration as institutional nominees. If you become aware of a program which limits the number of institutional nominations or applications, please contact Peter Saal, ext. 2-9033, to alert him to the need to set up appropriate internal review procedures.
