A. Training Policy Our Federalwide Assurance (FWA #00000125), on file with the federal oversight agency called the Office for Human Research Protections (OHRP), mandates that all investigators conducting research involving human subjects, or data or biological specimens derived therefrom, regardless of funding source or status, be trained in the protection of human subjects in research activities. This requirement has been in effect since early 2001. If all such individuals are not trained, IRB approval for pending projects will be withheld until such time as all individuals have satisfied the training requirement, as verified by the Office of Research Compliance. B. First time Trainees at SBU: the Collaborative IRB Training Program (CITI) First time trainees may satisfy SBU’s training requirement as follows: C. How long does first time training take? Completion of the initial training through CITI will take approximately 4-6 hours. The CITI site provides instructions on how to ‘save your place’, so that you can go back over multiple sessions to complete your training. D. What’s the passing grade for the CITI training? E. How long is my training certification good for? Certification is valid for three years. F. Who can use the CITI program? SBU offers access to the CITI program to all SBU faculty, staff, or students. Non-SBU investigators can use the CITI program if they are on file with CORIHS as an investigator on an IRB application (approved or pending). If you fail the CITI program, you will be informed of the modules that you failed and be given the opportunity to review them and to take the quizzes again. H. I trained through SBU already, and I need to renew my training. How do I do that? To renew your training you may either: (a) Proceed to the Collaborative IRB Training Program, available at http://www.citiprogram.org, register under SUNY University at Stony Brook. At the Select Groups' screen, complete questions 1. Answer 'no' to question 2, and then choose the group in question 3 (if this is your first time renewing) or question 4 (if this is your second time renewing--which means your initial SBU training was conducted sometime in 2000 or 2001) that best reflects the research in which you are involved. Follow all directions carefully, then click on the link "Grade book link" to enter the appropriate course.
(b) Live workshops for continuing education are available for groups of 20 or more individuals. Contact Judy Matuk at jmatuk@notes.cc.sunysb.edu to set up a session! I. Can I get CME/CEU credits for my training in human subject protections? The University of Miami (which provides the IT, administrative support, and home to the CITI program) issues CME/CEU credits for a fee. In order to qualify for CME/CEU credits, you must take and pass all required modules for the group you choose. Click the link for CME/CEU credits on the Learner's Menu for detailed information. J. I’m confused. Who can help me? Return to Human Subjects Research at SBU |
