Matthew Whelan

Dr. Matthew Whelan is Vice President for Strategic Initiatives serving as an advisor to the President in the areas of long term policy and strategic initiatives. He focuses on institutional priorities and planning, and takes the lead in identifying and facilitating cross-functional academic initiatives at Stony Brook.  He oversees additional locations in Manhattan, Southampton and SUNY Korea where he has led the development of new academic programs, facilities, and enrollment plans.  He is also charged with developing a best-in-class Office of Institutional Research, Planning, and Effectiveness.  He reports directly to the President. Dr. Whelan was formerly the Associate Provost for Enrollment and Retention Management at Stony Brook.

Dr. Whelan has spent the last 27 years working in key positions in college administration specifically in admissions, financial aid and enrollment management as well as strategic planning.  He joined Stony Brook in 2006 after serving in key positions at St. John's and Hofstra respectively.  He has been notably successful in advancing institutional goals in enrollment quality and access, and developing significant new revenue streams to support academic programs.

He has presented at local, regional and national meetings on issues of enrollment planning, strategy and team building.  He has recently presented at the International Leadership Association on academic turnaround and presidential leadership, and at the Global Intelligence Conference in Dungarvan, Waterford, Ireland on Competitive Intelligence and Knowledge Management in Higher Education.
