Interim Chief Information Officer
Chuck Powell, Assistant Provost for Teaching and Learning + Technology at Stony Brook University, is the Interim Chief Information Officer at Stony Brook University. In this position, Powell reports directly to President Samuel L. Stanley Jr., M.D. and oversees the Division of Information Technology in its mission to plan, provision, operate, and maintain computing, media and telecommunication services, facilities, and equipment, that meet the needs of the educational, research, and administrative programs of the University. He also collaborates with the CIO of Stony Brook University Medical Center and other distributed information technology leaders in the development of information systems to foster collegial interactions amongst the campuses and locations.
Chuck previously served for 13 years in a series of IT positions of increasing responsibility at Yale University. Chuck developed and led technology projects in education, research, student systems, digital media and IT operations. In 2010, he was appointed Associate Chief Information Officer for Operations, Support and Services and was responsible for Yale’s Information Technology infrastructure, client support organization, data centers, academic and research IT services, as well as the network and telecommunications organizations. From 1999 to 2010, Chuck’s responsibilities focused primarily in the academic space including media services, faculty and student support, learning space design and core teaching and learning systems.
Powell holds a B.S. from the United States Military Academy and a M.S. in Organizational Psychology from the University of Washington. After his graduation from West Point, Chuck served as a commissioned officer in the United States Army from 1978 until his retirement in 1999. In addition to progressive assignments in Armor and Armored Cavalry positions around the world Chuck also completed two assignments as a faculty member at the Military Academy teaching Leadership, Motivation, Group Dynamics at both the graduate and undergraduate levels. Chuck’s IT experience within the military spanned two continents and culminated in the Army Digitization Office in the Pentagon.
