It is my great pleasure to announce that after a national search which began in November 2011, Lyle P. Gomes has been named Vice President for Finance and Chief Budget Officer for Stony Brook University. Having received numerous applications from a number of extremely qualified professionals, Lyle emerged as the top candidate for this position based on his extensive portfolio of experience and broad knowledge of Stony Brook University and the State University of New York System including Research Foundation, Stony Brook Foundation, Faculty Student Association, the Long Island High Technology Incubator and SUNY Korea. Lyle has literally risen through the ranks of finance administration at Stony Brook; he accepts this position 27 years to the month since joining Stony Brook University as a Senior Financial Analyst.
As Vice President for Finance and Chief Budget Officer for Stony Brook, Lyle will work closely with me and report to Barbara Chernow, Senior Vice President for Administration. He will also work closely with the Provost/Senior Vice President for Academic Affairs/Vice President for Brookhaven Affairs, and the Senior Vice President for Health Sciences/Dean of the School of Medicine.
In this position, Lyle also holds the titles of Chief Financial
Officer for the Stony Brook Foundation; Board Treasurer for the
Faculty Student Association; Board Member, SUNY Korea LLC; Finance
and Audit Committee member; member of the Hospital Governing
Committee; and Brookhaven Science Associates. His four direct reports
include Associate Vice President and Controller; Assistant Vice
President for Procurement; Assistant Vice President for Budget and
Analysis; and Controller of the Stony Brook Foundation. The division
has a total staff of approximately 200 and an operating budget of
$12.5 million. He will oversee all accounting, bursar, procurement,
financial records, reports, and analysis for the University; annual
audits performed by external CPA firms; develop and advise on long- and short-term institutional planning; and, provide information and
research to support decision making and strategic planning.
During the search, Lyle served as Interim Vice President for Finance and Administration, for which I am extremely grateful. His most recent position at Stony Brook was Associate Vice President for Finance and University Controller; he held the latter post since 2004 and has been successful in all aspects of the financial operations at Stony Brook, including the management of our complex "all funds" finance and budget systems.
Lyle received his undergraduate degree in Accounting from Long Island University at C.W. Post and a Masters of Business in Administration from Dowling College. He is a certified management accountant (CMA), a member of the National Association of College and University Business Officers, and a member of the Government Finance Officers Association and former Chair of the State University of New York Accounting and Budget Association.
