Interim Dean, University Libraries
Daniel Kinney is the Interim Dean of University Libraries. He came to Stony Brook from CUNY in 1982. Other positions he has held at SBU include Associate Director of Libraries for Resource Management, Interim Deputy Director of the Health Sciences Library, Associate Director of Libraries for Collections and Technical Services, Assistant Director for Technical Services, and Head of the Music Library. He was a member of the Library Initiative Team for Project 50 Forward and is a past president of the Long Island Library Resources Council's Board of Trustees. He has contributed to various American Library Association groups and chaired the American Library Association's Cataloging Committee on Description and Access, which helped to develop the international standards scheduled to be adopted by the Library of Congress and other research libraries this year. He has given presentations at annual conferences of the American Library Association, the Music Library Association, and the SUNY Librarians Association. He taught graduate courses in library and information science for SPD and St. John's University and presented lecture-recitals and other performances as an organist. He has a Master's in Library and Information Science from Long Island University and a Master's in Music from Queens College. He is a member of Beta Phi Mu (library science honor society), Gamma Kappa Alpha (national Italian honor society), and Phi Sigma Iota (international foreign language honor society). He is a recipient of the Chancellor's Award for Excellence in Librarianship and the President's Award for Excellence in Librarianship. For the past several years, he has coordinated the Front Page Discussion Series at Stony Brook.
