Project 50 Forward

In 2010, Stony Brook University celebrated the 50th anniversary of our first graduating class. This is an appropriate milestone to set us on a trajectory of excellence for the next 50 years. To that end, we are launching an initiative called Project 50 Forward, dedicated to operational excellence, academic greatness, and building for our future. It is a comprehensive initiative designed to enhance the fundamental teaching, research, and service mission of Stony Brook University, while building a platform to support the future growth of the University and strengthen Stony Brook’s role in the economic renewal of New York State. Ultimately this will help propel Stony Brook into the ranks of the top 20 public research universities in the country.

To accomplish this, together we must work more efficiently, more effectively, more strategically, and more creatively to streamline operations, enhance academics, develop new revenue streams, and direct more resources to our core mission of teaching and research. A targeted gift from the Stony Brook Foundation has enabled us to enlist the expertise of one of the world’s top management consultants, Bain & Company, to assist in our mission toward achieving operational excellence.

At the foundation of Stony Brook University are the outstanding faculty and exceptional students. To support the University's mission for reaching new heights of academic greatness, Project 50 Forward will establish and launch a new Strategic Plan for the University as developed with input from many sources within the academic community, including faculty leadership and University administration. Following a significant review of the academic structure, systems, and programs, Stony Brook’s Strategic Plan will identify and address areas in which efficiencies and best practices may be implemented.

Our beautiful campus and the facilities in which we operate are truly at the core of what enables Stony Brook University students and faculty to excel. This is why we are constantly reviewing and evaluating how to do things better. As part of Project 50 Forward, with the help of many campus-represented groups designated as part of an advisory committee, we are developing a Facilities Master Plan. The committee is charged with the review, analysis, and formulation of a best-use model for new and existing buildings and infrastructure for all Stony Brook University campuses—Main Campus, Medical Center, Research and Development Park, Manhattan, and Southampton.

Through Project 50 Forward, Stony Brook University will be poised and positioned for excellence for years to come. We will have the resources to provide the infrastructure necessary to enable faculty and students at every level to pursue scholarship, groundbreaking research, and revolutionary discovery.

Even in this challenging fiscal environment, I have every confidence that we will reach new heights, set new standards for excellence, and achieve greatness at every level. Through Project 50 Forward we will create a more efficient, more effective Stony Brook University, an exceptional research institution of higher learning that will propel our students and our community, setting a new standard for the next 50 years and beyond.
