Green Initiatives

In 2006, as a traffic safety initiative, four radar-activated vehicle speed indicators were purchased and placed in key locations around campus. These units serve to make drivers aware of the speed they are traveling as they enter and move around on campus roads.

Powered by a combination of solar panels and batteries, the units run directly off the solar panels during the daylight hours, switch to battery power at night, then the batteries are recharged by the solar panels during the day.

These devices have been very effective in speed control by raising driver awareness along with serving as an additional green initiative for Stony Brook University.
