Stony BrookBuilding on Strength
A study published by Johns Hopkins University Press ranks Stony Brook as one of the nation's top three public research universities in terms of per capita faculty research productivity. The University receives more than one hundred million dollars from research grants annually. This same distinguished faculty can be found lecturing and interacting with undergraduates on a daily basis.
A Commitment to Excellence
The University has made a commitment to lead our students through undergraduate and graduate experiences that provide unlimited educational and research options. The Biology Learning Laboratories is a prime example of the broad range of research and creative activities available to students.
The life sciences at Stony Brook enjoy worldwide stature, and major advances in our understanding of the basic mechanisms of disease have been achieved here. We have now gone a step further.
The Next Step Toward Scientific Understanding
With the CMM/BLL, we have created an educational and research environment that begins with the selection of gifted students and nurtures them into the next generation of scientific explorers. It provides opportunities for high quality basic and clinical research, and results in translational research that impacts individual health care.
The infrastructure for translational research is already present in the Health Sciences Centercomprising the Schools of Medicine, Dentistry, Health Technology and Management, Nursing, and Social Welfareand University Hospital. Widely acclaimed as one of the best teaching hospitals in the country, University Hospital cares for and treats half a million ambulatory patients and 25,000 hospitalized patients each year. It is the educational resource for the students being trained in patient care, and also a major resource for clinical research. It is here that the results of the translational research conducted at the CMM will be most readily apparent in improved patient treatment and care.
