Hit the TARGET…The Advising Resource Guide for Entering Transfers
Go to www.stonybrook.edu/orientation for information about your Orientation day,
including directions to Stony Brook and information on campus parking. There, you will also find links to important academic
advising information including majors and minors, fall class offerings, and AP and transfer credit information.
Take the Proctored Math Assessment (if required)
Yes, I have taken a college-level pre-calc or calculus class: If you have completed a pre-calculus or calculus college-level course with a grade of C or
better, OR earned at least a 4 or 5 on an AP calculus exam, you are not required to take the proctored math assessment. Please submit your official transcript
or AP scores to: Transfer Office, 134 Administration, Stony Brook University, Stony Brook, NY 11794-1909, or bring a copy with you to your Orientation day
(as well as a math course description and syllabus) so it can be recorded. Otherwise, you will NOT be able to register for math or science-related classes at Orientation.
Important Note: Statistics is NOT a calculus-based course, and while many statistics classes will meet Stony Brook’s general education math requirement (called DEC C),
it does not fulfill the calculus requirement for science-related majors. Business calculus and many “calculus for life sciences” courses do not meet Stony Brook’s
calculus requirement for sciences, either. If this applies to you, please take the proctored math assessment prior to your Orientation. If you feel you could score
better than your transfer equivalent course, we RECOMMEND you take the proctored math assessment prior to your Orientation. A higher score on the assessment will
potentially allow you to enroll in a higher-level math course, if desired by you or required by your intended major. See the details that follow on how to sign up
and take the proctored math assessment.
No, I have not taken a college-level pre-calc or calculus class: If you have NOT completed a pre-calculus or calculus
college-level course with a grade of C or better, OR earned at least a 4 or 5 on an AP calculus exam, you are REQUIRED to take the proctored math assessment.
You MUST complete the assessment at least TWO BUSINESS DAYS prior to your Orientation. See the details that follow on how to sign up and take the proctored math assessment.
Please sign up today so you get your preferred date, time, and location!
Important Note: We have reserved a limited number of spaces to offer the proctored math assessment on Orientation days if you are an out-of-state student and cannot
travel to campus before your Orientation.
How do I sign up and take the proctored math assessment? If you need to take the proctored math assessment please go to
www.stonybrook.edu/orientation and click on “Math Assessment Info” to sign up. Note that assessments take place on the Main, Southampton, and Manhattan campuses, so
please select a location that is most convenient for you. You will need your name or Stony Brook ID to sign on, as well as your birth date. You must
take the proctored math assessment PRIOR to registering for classes at Orientation.
If you have any questions about the proctored math assessment, please
visit www.stonybrook.edu/orientation.
Complete the Online Writing Placement Essay (if required)
If you have completed an English composition or other equivalent course (three credits or more) at a previous institution and earned at least a
grade of C or better, OR earned at least a 3, 4, or 5 on an AP English Literature/Comp or English Language/ Comp exam, do not take the online writing
placement essay. Otherwise, please go to
www.stonybrook.edu/orientation and click on “Writing Placement Info” to sign up. Note that you need to complete
the essay at least TWO WEEKS prior to your scheduled Orientation, so sign up today!
If you have any questions about the online writing placement essay, please visit
www.stonybrook.edu/orientation.
Gather College Transcripts and Required Course Syllabi
If you have not already mailed official transcripts for any college coursework completed, please contact each school’s Registrar’s Office and request that an
official transcript be sent to: Transfer Office, 134 Administration Building, Stony Brook University, Stony Brook, NY 11794-1909. Bring a copy of all college
transcripts, including courses completed and in progress, to your Orientation. For any science, math, engineering, and business classes (except those taken
at Nassau Community, Suffolk Community, or SUNY Farmingdale), bring copies of course descriptions and syllabi. Having this information is necessary to give you proper credit.
Submit Your High School Transcript if You Earned an 85 or Better on a Foreign Language Regents Exam
If you are a student in the College of Arts and Sciences, College of Business, School of Journalism, or School of Marine and Atmospheric Sciences, you need to complete
a skill 3 foreign languages. If you have completed a college-level elementary level II course, you have fulfilled this requirement. If you did not complete a
college-equivalent course, but did earn an 85 or higher on a New York State foreign language Regents exam, contact your high school and ask them to send an official
high school transcript to: Transfer Office, 134 Administration Building, Stony Brook University, Stony Brook, NY 11794-1909. An 85 or higher on the Regents exam will
satisfy your skill 3 requirements.
Submit Advanced Placement (AP) Credit Report
If you earned at least a 3 on any AP exam and you have not already sent your score report to Stony Brook, call the Educational Testing Services at
(609) 771-7300 and give them school code #2548. Any AP or other standardized test reports should be mailed to: Transfer Office, 134 Administration Building,
Stony Brook University, Stony Brook, NY 11794-1909.
Complete Your Student Health Form
Keeping you safe and healthy is a top priority at Stony Brook. Toward that end, you must have a physician complete and sign your Student Health Form, including
documentation of immunizations. This form was included in your Admissions packet and must be mailed to: Student Health Service, Stony Brook University,
Stony Brook, NY 11794-3191 PRIOR TO your Orientation day in order to register for classes. Detailed information and forms are available at
www.studentaffairs.stonybrook.edu/shs/healthrequirements.
Important Note: Failure to submit your Student Health Form will result in deregistration from your first semester of classes.
