Dates: June 2 - July 2, 2008
Application Deadline: April 1, 2008

This National Institutes of Health program was developed to encourage underrepresented students at two-year institutions who want to transfer to four-year schools and prepare for careers in the biological sciences. Participants receive $2400 salary for completion of BioPREP and are responsible for their room ($800) and board costs. There are several dining facilities on campus.

Admission Criteria
* A minimum cumulative grade of a B (3.0 GPA)
* A minimum of 24 credits to be completed by the end of the Spring 2007 semester
* An introductory biology course is a prerequisite (more biology and/or chemistry is preferred)
* This is a mandatory residential program (Monday through Friday) and students must be able to commit their time fully (including evenings) to this program for the full five-week period.

Applications
A complete application package includes:
1) a copy of your college transcript(s),

3) proof of citizenship or permanent residency (copy of birth certificate or permanent residency card)
4) a one-page statement expressing your professional goals and your ideas to encourage underrepresented students to pursue biomedical careers

Molecular Biology Research
Students work in the Molecular and Cellular Biology Laboratory where they learn laboratory techniques including:

Isolation of DNA Inoculation of bacterial cultures
Mini preps from bacterial cultures Restriction enzyme digests
Ligation of DNA Bacterial transformation
Preparation of solutions Polymerase chain reaction (PCR)
Restriction and amplified fragment Length polymorphism (RFLP, AFLP)
Gel electrophoresis (agarose and polyacrylamide) Hybridization
Protein expression Protein purification
Western blotting

After learning the techniques, the students formulate proposals for individual research projects. Concentrated work on these projects begins during the second week of the program.

Other Activities
Award Ceremony & Poster Session: An award ceremony is held with family and guests invited.

Lab Meetings & Presentations: Students attend weekly lab meetings to discuss newly learned lab techniques and to present results from their ongoing research.

Guest Speaker Series: Guest lecturers speak to the students regarding various aspects of the biological sciences.

Computer Access: Students have internet access and learn how to perform scientific literature searches using PubMed (from the National Library of Medicine) and how to access gene information using Genbank (from the National Center for Biotechnology Information).
