Introduction
The Suffolk County, New York: Legislature Committee Collection, MC 275, was collected and created by the staff of the Special Collections Department and University Archives from 1974 through 1988. During this period, the collection was brought together through the consolidation of the committees’ minutes and hearings from various donations received by the Department. Individual donations were received from public officials; additional reports and records were acquired sporadically.

Although lacking a cohesive foundation or any authentic provenance, these records form the foundation of a valuable collection that provides an important overview of the work accomplished by the Suffolk County government over the course of two decades and provides first hand accounts of the inner workings of local politics and government.

The collection is open to research without restrictions in accordance with general access principles, and under the discretion of the Special Collections Department Staff. All requests to use or reproduce any records should be addressed to staff.

Scope and Content Note
The records found within this collection are arranged chronologically based on a schema developed by department staff at the time of the collection’s creation. The collection as a whole is a valuable resource and provides insight to the committee work done by Suffolk County's elected officials during the 1970s and 1980s. Of particular interest to Long Island researchers are the hearings on environmental issues of the time which ultimately had a great impact on Long Island’s present day ecology and evolution.
